If you look closely at the petiole of Viburnum trilobum (📷: Peter Zika CCBYNC4) to see the extrafloral nectaries just below the blade. Extrafloral nectaries are common in Viburnum petioles, but they also occur as marginal teeth or embedded in the blade. #Viburnaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Leaf vocabulary 2: PELTATE means shield-shaped & describes the attachment of the petiole to the ± middle (rather than the edge) of the blade, as in Peperomia hernandiifolia. The petiole attaches to the back of the blade where the leaf veins originate. #Piperaceae #botany 🌾🧪🌱

Food bodies of Cecropia are produced from patches (trichillia) at the bases of the petioles, as seen here on a Cecropia species. Müllerian bodies, rich in glycogen & lipids, are payment for the ants to keep them on the job defending the plants against herbivores. #Urticaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Here's a leaf-mimicking katydid that does things a little different compared to the previous ones I posted. This is Aegimia maculifolia from the Ecuadorian Chocó rainforest. It mimics an intact fresh leaf, sometimes with a sunburn spot, and its horn resembles the leaf's petiole.
