How Everything Became Gambling
It’s not just DraftKings and Polymarket — the logic of gambling undergirds everything coming out of Silicon Valley.

re: INCUMBENCY/PENETRATION, all of this means that this bill *does not solve* battles fights over fossil fuels but, rather, inflames & pushes those fights down to state and local venues and place-based fights over, e.g., public lands O&G development.

🚨It is a boost to petrostate politics.🚨

re: INCUMBENCY/PENETRATION, fossil fuels need a relentless series of federal approvals to sustain incumbency. E.g., in the Permian, ever more drilling permits every faster to sustain produx, pipelines to connect w/AI data centers, etc. Also ignores political economy risk (petrostate politics).

Norway's new car sales market is absolutely tiny. For most people in 🇳🇴 an EV has been a cheaper 2nd car. Very little to do with environmental concerns. Note too, with among the world's highest total (including exported) CO2 emissions per capita, EV sales in petrostate 🇳🇴 are a drop in the ocean.

The Alberta separation referendum in Canada is losing overwhelmingly.

Turns out even the most right wing part of Canada doesn't want to become a petrostate puppet of the USA.

there is a parallel story here with the first generation of cryptocurrency idealists

the very first enthusiasts were trying to do things like overturn oligarchs and disrupt petrostate currency and bring financial inclusion to the billion people that can't trust their bank

#Alberta is a failing #petrostate, where polluters debts are just being transferred to the public.
@mark-carney.bsky.social has given Smith more power to pollute. It’s the plan & it’s about to get a whole lot worse when they begin to build their gas plants to power US big tech #NoGasForAI #CdnPoli
Analysis shows Alberta companies owe millions in unpaid land rent
Taxpayers covered lease payments for hundreds of oil and gas companies in 2025

Similar to how they ignore the way that Russia is a right-wing theocratic Christian imperial petrostate, but going a step further beyond just ignoring the sexism & racism & homophobia & environmental destruction & denying the imperialism, to *praising* their colonialism

"For many of the nations represented by leaders here it is literally a threat to their very existence. Which is why the world must act" - Anthony Albanese, head of petrostate govt that issued their 37th fossil fuel new/extension project approval on 3 Sep 2026

Australians and/or energy experts: is this accurate? I'm not used to seeing Australia as a petrostate (at least no more so than Canada)
This country is pretty much built on fossil fuel extraction. I believe by 2060 enough of the world will have decarbonised for e.g. thermal coal export to no longer be a viable economic backbone. When that happens, it’s Showtime (tm)

I’m sad that there will be the destruction of two very old longstanding American (and international) brands, in order for petrostate governments and billionaire weirdos to control more media on behalf of a senile president.
To say nothing of the assault on wages and working conditions that follows

Don't you think it's funny that an ostensibly «green» politician is in service of the biggest petrostate on the planet?

#Canada teetered close to becoming an electrostate under Justin Trudeau.

Under Carney, Canada is being pushed into being a #petrostate.

What is an electrostate?
It is not a club you are in or out of. It is a direction of travel.

Petrostate was a category privileged by geography and geologic history. Electrostate is far more equitable and empowering, because it’s a choice.
