“Schopenhauer’s is a great pessimism, not least because it reveals a signature motif of the pessimistic imagination. As indicated, Schopenhauer’s insights are yoked to a philosophical superstructure centered on the Will, or the Will-to-live—a blind, deaf, and dumb force that rouses human beings to their detriment. While Schopenhauer’s system of thought is as impossible to swallow as that of any other systematic philosopher, no intelligent person can fail to see that every living thing behaves exactly in conformity with his philosophy in its liberal articulation. Wound up like toys by some force—call it Will, élan vital, anima mundi, physiological or psychological processes, nature, or whatever—organisms go on running as they are bidden until they run down. In pessimistic philosophies only the force is real, not the things activated by it. They are only puppets, and if they have consciousness may mistakenly believe they are self-winding persons who are making a go of it on their own.” ~Thomas Ligotti, TCATHR (Screenshot of a quote from The Conspiracy Against the Human Race with a section high lighted, "In pessimistic philosophies only the force is real, not the things activated by it.")

“A life such as the one displayed by the structural description could never be ‘good’ or ‘beautiful.’ It can at best be kept on a bearable level by virtue of the efficacy of the positive values with which human beings manage to postpone the consummation of the terminality acquired at birth. Pleasures, joys, and achievements are terminal themselves, apart from being occasional, fleeting, and expensive ("unhappy happiness", according to Augustine), and they take place within the frame of the merely bearable.” ~ Julio Cabrera

“We are forced to struggle, to compete and to win, and we are obliged not to mind living in a society maintained by the slave-like labor of most people.
To go on living, we must learn to cultivate a certain degree of moral insensitivity.”
