From Wired's author page: Alan Levinovitz is a professor at James Madison University

Professor of what? Must be like biology or something right.

The amount of responses that can't process the online world and what is behind people posting things in the most basic of ways is amazing.

Dude is a professor of religion. He just *may* be capable of AI sarcasm.

Hi #theologysky #theosky
I'm a newly finished #phdsky in science & religion (QM, paradox & the incarnation) this- currently entirely distinct from my role in HE sch & coll engagement.

Secret: @ ♥️I'm #philsky (#philsci or #philrel) but have ended up in theology spaces!

But you are right. At the religious and secular schools I have attended, they all had selling courses (those courses for which the uni allowed in a phil). If one wanted a phil dep, go with BusEth, bioethics, PhilRel, phil ed., critical thinking, and SocPoli. You could do aesth for an arts credit.

Hey Biblical scholars, does anyone have a copy of Dale Allison's essay "The Problem of Gehenna" that they could send me? I can DM an e-mail to you.

Wait, what is the point of this story? If you get rid of a demon, then you will get 7 more? Or it is saying don't clean your house after you cast out a demon? So strange.

#pandeism says there was once a maximally-powerful, omnipresent consciousness which could not love or learn as it was all there was.

It knew giving partial reign to chaos for a time would bring pain, suffering, and unfairness. But it was the only other option. It chose to fragment

Theists say that every house has a builder, and every watch a designer, so too does the universe.

Except a house is built out of house materials and a watch out of watch materials, whereas the classical theist asserts that the universe was created from...?

This is him. He's a professor who "focuses primarily on the relationship between religion, literature, and science". I think he understood the text! I think he was joking about not being able to! www.jmu.edu/philrel/peop...

Comparing worldviews rationally seems to convey the assumption that all worldviews are held in service of similar goals.

A made-up religion bearing relatively useful moral/ethical advice may be “better” in terms of human wellbeing than a “scientific” view that encourages moral/ethical nihilism.

This paper argues that moral realism (the idea of objective moral truths) is incompatible with non-theism.

Despite the author’s apparent intent, I find that the paper inadvertently makes a compelling argument… against moral realism.

Thoughts?

This principle has clear implications for what it means for #God to be good. If the definition of "good" as predicated in human agents cannot define what is in God, then God cannot be "morally" good, as mainstream disputants over the problem of evil often assume. #philrel #philsky
"Since our intellect does not completely grasp the divine essence by .. concepts that .. names predicated of God signify, definitions of the names cannot define what is in God. E.g.,, the definition of power cannot be the definition of divine power, + similarly in the case of other names." -#Aquinas

... then God will be utterly unlike any kind of composite and contingent item in an ontology, the Force included! Stump and Zoll betray how completely they overlook the possibility that #God as the Ultimate might transcend the ontological structure proper to created things. 3/3 #philrel

"To picture #God as an additional being over against or parallel to the universe itself will be to treat God similarly to objects within the universe, related to the universe itself as objects within the world are related to each other."

It absolutely is! Some of the replies to this thread show this type of illumination is sorely needed haha. It's pretty accessible to non-philosphers as well. I've started to self-study logic/philrel and I think this book can serve as a great springboard into further study in this area.
