Eventually, the larvae completely devour the ant's brain, causing it to wander aimlessly for about two weeks. After about two to four weeks, they cause the ant's head to fall off by releasing an enzyme that dissolves the membrane attaching the ant's head to its body.

Triphleba flexipalpis...one of a few males lekking on Ivy beneath Beech trees in a wood in East Yorkshire, UK. It has two remarkably large, banana-shaped palps, as long as its face is deep.

Myriophora sp. behoren tot de bochelvliegen (Phoridae). In de "nieuwe wereld" (waar #Saba ligt) zie je ze bij miljoenpoten. Miljoenpoten geven een gifstof af waar insecten door worden afgeschrikt, maar omdat Myriophora juist eieren legt in miljoenpoten, lokt het gif hen juist aan. #ElkeDagEenInsect

There's undescribed biodiversity all around us! Not long ago, Brian Brown and Emily Hartop put up some malaise traps smack in the middle of Los Angeles, and right away they described 30 new species of phorid flies.

Last year I found an ant (Camponotus pennsylvanicus) running like it was on fire, then noticed a tiny insect hovering over it, matching every move. Pretty sure it was Apocephalus coquilletti, an ant-decapitating scuttle fly (Phoridae). #flies #ants #diptera #hymenoptera #insects #nature #entomology

I suspect that this is the puparium of a scuttle fly (Phoridae). The shape is similar to ones I've seen and they often fill this niche. Weird stuff!!!!

Something interesting about this spider being consumed by #fungus, is that the hairs are part of scuttle #fly #Phoridae pupae. I call these chest bursters dude to the damage the hatching flies do. Some species target human corpses, the #coffin flies. #Zombie fungis cant catch a break some days.
