Female Leaf Insects, family Phylliidae, most likely from the genus Phyllium. In addition to looking like leaves, they also mimic leaf movements. As they walk, they often rock back & forth to look like a leaf fluttering in the breeze. #nature #wildlife #science #biology

Think about the process that led to this.

At no point was there any controlling intelligence that knew what a leaf "looks like".

This is the result of millions of years of blind trial and error, climbing up gradients of fitness, until an insect is shaped like a leaf. 😀

Dieses Bild zeigt eine faszinierende Sammlung von Insekten, die sich durch mimetische Tarnung (Mimese) perfekt an ihre Umgebung angepasst haben. Hier ist, was zu sehen ist:

1. Oben links (grün, wie ein Blatt) → Das ist eine Blattheuschrecke (Familie Tettigoniidae, z. B. Phyllomimus oder Typophyllum). Sie sieht echten Blättern täuschend ähnlich.

2. Mittig (gelbgrün, großes „Blatt“) → Das ist ein Blattinsekt (Phyllium sp.), auch Walking Leaf genannt. Es gehört zur Ordnung der Gespenstschrecken (Phasmatodea) und ist ein Meister der Tarnung – selbst die Blattadern sind imitiert.

3. Rechts (graubraun, wie ein Zweig) → Das ist ein Stabheuschrecken- oder Gespenstschreckenart (Phasmatodea, z. B. Carausius morosus). Sie tarnen sich perfekt als Zweig oder Ast.

4. Unten (rosa, blütenartig) → Das ist eine Orchideenmantis (Hymenopus coronatus). Diese Gottesanbeterin ahmt Blütenblätter nach, um Beute anzulocken.

5. Unten links (dunkelbraun, wie ein welkes Blatt) → Wahrscheinlich eine welkes-Blatt-Imitation einer anderen Gespenstschreckenart oder Blattheuschrecke – schwer genau zu bestimmen, aber ebenfalls ein Mimese-Experte.

Kurz gesagt:
➡️ Von oben nach unten: Blattheuschrecke – Blattinsekt – Stabschrecke – welke-Blatt-Imitation – Orchideenmantis.

Ein großartiges Beispiel für die Vielfalt der Tarnung und Mimikry in der Insektenwelt! 🪲

trying not to lean against
what appears to be
a booger on the
wall, trying
not to
entertain
what you've
insisted is false,
trying to believe it
is all made up when I
trust my intuition and I
know that it's not and I know
that it has to be regardless of else
but I believe and trust your intuition too
turning my focus away because it
would only keep hurting to stay
eaves dropping on coworker
conversations which are
about as successful
as the point of
this poem
