Time for a #NerdyMouseAlert. Look away now if you don't like minute technical detail. A pilaster strip sits in a channel in the wall. It may be laid with each stone course or cut in later #PilasterStrip #StLaurenceDecoration #WallsOnWednesday #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire

The vertical, very slight projection from this wall's surface is a pilaster strip or lesene (different from a pilaster which has a base and capital) #PilasterStrip. It is a feature of both Saxon and Norman architecture #WallsOnWednesday #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire

If you want your building details to look crisp and clean, even after 150 years of neglect, consider cast iron.

West elevation of the Norman Great Tower #ChepstowCastle #WallsOnWednesday

The loss of the top of the pilaster strip (centre) and clasping pilaster (right) shows the construction of the tower; faced with dressed stone and with a rubble core #AlwaysZoomIn

Pilaster is stripped and sanded. Now it’ll head into the shop for the rest of the restoration.

You know what, let's talk about the Bakery of Modestus in Pompeii. Because Ancient Rome was a male-dominated (and highly misogynistic) society, male attributes were considered symbols of good luck. And this bakery had not one, but two phallus plaques at either side of the entrance doorway!

I'm a huge fan of archaeological photos where we get our first peek at objects in the field. Here, a 1st c. CE marble monopodium (table base) in the form of a naked boy holding a goose appears out of the lapilli in #Pompeii in 1952. 🏺 #ancientbluesky 1/

You can see more if it's broken...

Here you can see the stone courses corresponding to base and capital and the vertical and horizontal lines where the pilaster and string course have been hacked away #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire #StLaurenceDecoration

🔧 The bronze statues have been installed in “Gazebo Gardens” at Disney Adventure World. They include Peter Pan perched on a pilaster, Winnie the Pooh sitting on a bench, and Pongo and Dalmatian puppies around another bench:

#SpoliaSunday shows the ruthlessness of #spolia reuse and today is no different. Here under the "new ward" of the Ospedale S. Giovanni in #Rome, from the C18, we find a C2 CE marble #pilaster built into the foundation, probably from the family #domus of #MarcusAurelius. #AncientBluesky 🏺

At my winter job restoring historic windows, I got to work on something a little different yesterday. This is a pilaster from a 1780s tavern. We have 4 of these to do a full restoration on, starting with stripping off old paint and sanding.

This was given to us as a uni 2nd year architecture project - reinstate a station with a similar presence. The last remnant of the original station is a pilaster on the left. My idea was to make it have a similar feel and silhouette as the original and incorporate the pilaster as a V1 blast memorial
