Spoiling myself with spolias. Again.

For #SpoliaSunday, a C2 CE #column in the #Lateran cloister. When the C15 papacy moved to the #Vatican, the sidelined Lateran rebranded this architectural spolia as the #Temple column that split at Christ's death, an ingenious ploy to draw pilgrims. #AncientBluesky 🏺

🏛🧱⛏️ = ⛪️

It's not *quite* at the astonishing level of Roman fabric reuse at the early medieval All Saints', Brixworth, but the Anglo-Saxon church of St Mary's, Breamore, still has LOTS of Roman spolia in the form of reused red brick/tile (CBM = Ceramic Building Material).

Wonderful example. Séguier's decoding of the pin holes at the Maison Carrée is fascinating. The stone remembers & we also see this in spolia, such as on the Arch of Constantine, where original faces & names were chiseled away & modified to serve a new narrative. etc.worldhistory.org/travel/hadri...

For #ReliefWednesday, a fascinating piece of #spolia from the garden façade of the #VillaMedici. The central panel shows a suovetaurilia sacrifice, confidently assigned by Theodor #Mommsen and his successors to the Ara Pietatis Augusti, built by #Tiberius. #AncientBluesky 🏺

🏛🧱 SPOLIA ALERT!

The lovely remnants of Boxgrove Priory seem to have incorporated reused Roman ceramic building material (CBM - brick/tile) in the guest house, which is always very cool, if relatively standard practice in a region containing Fishbourne Roman Palace and more!

Last day of October. The name still means eighth; the month still sits tenth. Live with the scar in the language. Every month from September onward is lying about its number, politely, in Latin.

For #SpoliaSunday, these fluted C15 #spolia #columns in a courtyard of the S. Spirito hospital survive from the ancient Horti Agrippinae below. In their presence, perhaps, the cruel emperor #Caligula would have unfortunates suffer arbitrary and violent fates. #AncientBluesky 🏺

I have doubts on the structural integrity of future rubble and spolia from anything utilitarian/Bauhaus architecture.

Before 1777, Falerio Picenus was a nearly perfectly-preserved #Roman town. Then Pius VI’s diggers arrived. For #MosaicMonday, we examine this Antonine-era leopard #emblema, stripped from a private #domus and treated as #spolia in the Vatican's Scala Simonetti. #AncientBluesky 🏺

This whole thread lol. But also I think reading RCG and then comparing against two of Opal's HR works, Spolia Victoris and Wolfbird, is very illuminating.
I planned to write and read FOR FUN today, but realized I hadn’t spent much time looking @ resources people kindly sent to help me learn to better identify AI output where fic should be. So I’ve printed out Rose-Colored Glasses chapter 1 (iykyk!) and I’m going to highlight lines that irk or bore me

A #watercolour sketch from 1821 by the visiting #French artist Augustin-Théophile Quantinet shows us what the courtyard of palazzo #Varese looked like before. The #fountain in the #garden looks delightful, and two ancient statues in niches flanked the portal leading to it.

Colchester is one of those rare places where you can literally see nearly a millennium of history in a single doorway. The structure is late Anglo-Saxon (mid-11th century), but the distinctive red bricks are Roman spolia, salvaged from buildings erected centuries earlier.
The late Anglo-Saxon west doorway at Holy Trinity Church in Colchester. Dating to the mid-11th century, the doorway incorporates re-used Roman bricks. 📸 My own. #AdoorableThursday #HolyTrinity #Colchester
