#pinyon
Good morning! It is November 6th in the United Socialist States of America.

Today we commemorate Resource Workers Day. Managing the world's bounty is a crucial job!

We celebrate the pinyon rockcress, boechara dispar.

Doug Sahm was born today in 1941; Dorothy Allison died on this day in 2024.

Combining value and vulnerability of pinyon–juniper ecosystems for climate‐smart management: A case study in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
We develop and demonstrate a new framework for land management in the context of climate transition which incorporates vegetation vulnerability as well as human-value scores. We apply this framework ....

Clark's nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana), pinyon jay
(Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus), Western scrub jay (Aphelocoma californica) and Mexican jay (Aphelocoma ultramarine) all cache seeds, with pinyon jay and nutcracker being more specialist.

Pinyon jays travel in noisy flocks, this one consisting of about 200 birds. They descended on our bird feeder one day for about 30 minutes and then they were gone. #PinyonJays #birds #jays #Arizona #photography

😭 Pinyon Jays!!!

I do a weekly trip into town. Every other week it's 130 when I get black oil - it's the most expensive, so they get less!
October 28, 2026 at 10:15 PM
It's the blackbirds and pinyon jays who are most voracious here. They'll wipe out all three main feeders within an hour or less.

I try to keep the restocking trips every other week because it's an hour drive each way. But there are times I'm driving mainly for the bird food.

The big red dot is Pinyon Plain uranium mine inside Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. Arsenic levels at the mine are rising. Scientists say there isn't enough scientific evidence to know why.

Analysis Finds Elevated Arsenic at Uranium Mine Near Havasupai Tribe's Only Water Source
An active uranium mine on the ancestral lands of the Havasupai Tribe is showing elevated levels of arsenic, according to a new analysis of more than 30 years of groundwater sampling of nearby aquifers. The Pinyon Plain uranium mine, owned and operated by Energy Fuels Inc., sits inside the boundaries of Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni — Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. The mine received permits in the mid-1980s; a drop in uranium prices shuttered it in 1992. It sat dormant for decades until 2023, when it began extracting ore. The existing permit allowed the company to avoid restrictions imposed by a 2012 rule banning uranium mining on the 1 million acres surrounding the Grand Canyon. The Havasupai Tribe, the nonprofit Grand Canyon Trust, and other conservation groups sued Pinyon in 2013 to stop mining, but a court ruled against the plaintiffs in 2022. The mine sits near the Havasupai’s sacred mountain, Red Butte, and above the deep Redwall-Muav aquifer, which feeds Havasu Creek and is the tribe’s only water source. The Grand Canyon Trust conducted the new analysis, which reviewed arsenic concentrations at 40 wells and springs in the Grand Canyon region using water quality data collected...

Four wells near the Grand Canyon have arsenic levels above safe drinking water standards. Three of them are at a uranium mine.

The mine says that’s to be expected. Scientists and the Havaupai Tribe say more info is needed to protect communities.
