FreeBSD 15 trims legacy fat and revamps how OS is built
I think I'm understating how much promise pkgbase holds for OS patching and OS upgrade (15.0 -> 15.1). The demo I saw at BSDCan 2026 made me realize how much easier this process may become.

If You upgrade PKGBASE FreeBSD from 15.0 to 15.1 then make sure You have these installed after 'pkg upgrade':
- *-pam
- *-pam-dev
- *-pam-lib
- *-zstd-lib
Because w/o them - You will not be able to login(1) or use pkg(8) at all.

Been working on "yet another project"
Turning a Raspberry Pi into a Stratum-1 time server.
BUT, doing it with FreeBSD instead of Linux!
Not only that, but using ZFS as the root file system.
And using pkgbase for the operating system files themselves.
Its all working as of last night!
