Your periodic reminder that these are NOT turtles but Placodonts, a group of amazing extinct marine reptiles that lived during the Triassic!

Placodonts are amazing! Exhibit A: Cyamodus orientalis. And no, this is NOT a turtle.

This is an illustration for my book (in preparation) You can see this one and another Placodont I reconstructed for my book in a new post exclusive for my patrons

happy #fossilfriday! bonus: this is psephoderma, a placodont from late triassic europe. placodonts were sauropterygians – meaning that they were related to pliosaurs and plesiosaurs – with distinctive teeth well-suited to crushing the shells of molluscs

Sneak peek of pages 162-163 of my book “Journey to The Mesozoic: Tetrapods of the Triassic”

The text is not proofread yet … I keep editing and changing so there are plenty of typos that I still need to fix

I propose that we start calling Henodus, and by extension other cyamodontoids (i.e. shelled placodonts), Mock Turtles
April 27, 2026 at 6:26 AM
Not just them. I’m including nothosaurs, pistosaurs, placodonts, pachypleurosaurs, saurosphargids, etc.

Placodonts are weird, ya'll; only two of these guys are turtles!
Lets go triassic turtles and not turtles #sciart

Have you done any non-plesiosaurian sauropterygians? Saurosphargids, pistosaurs, nothosaurs, placodonts, etc.

Lapras is likely inspired by Plesiosaurs, placodonts, specifically from the Cyamodontoidea superfamily, which have shells not unlike Lapras's, the Loch ness monster, and possibly endangered turtles, whales, and other arctic marine animals. Design from 2024-25.

Have you done placodonts yet?

Placodonts are super weird and I love them. Probably need to do microwear on their teeth if it hasn't been done yet.

Any creature design that includes placodonts is excellent in my view. I love them to a fault. And I love httyd. This is amazing 🤩

Tritorian Elasmosaurus is a mysterious oddity to witness within the coasts and river ways of Tritora, switching between such variants of water depending on prey availability - it is a specialist in placodonts and turtle species.
