IGI's Ben Rubin (Rubin Lab), Jonathan Martinson, and Leo Song reveal that plasmids can actively kill bacteria that resist taking them in, driving their own spread throughout bacterial populations. Learn more in this short explainer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vzOoFFj3cE

Timing worked out perfectly! First day back from maternity leave and I presented my lab to the department at the DQBM Minisymposium.

The Molecular Plasmid Ecology Lab studies how plasmids interact and why it matters for the spread of antibiotic resistance.

And just in time, we are live: benzlab.ch
Molecular Plasmid Ecology Lab
Plasmids are small DNA molecules that can move between bacterial cells. When a plasmid carries an antibiotic resistance gene, that gene can spread quickly through a bacterial population. We study what...

Out in @narjournal.bsky.social! DNA defenses can destroy incoming plasmids, leaving cells vulnerable to repeated conjugation and cell death (lethal zygosis).

And this is story is officially out! Very happy to have been a part of this great team of people. Can conjugative plasmids be used to control plasmid and pathogen spread? Give us a read to find out! 😜
Now officially out in its final form! 🥳

A big thank you once again to all co-authors, to the reviewers for their thoughtful suggestions that helped improve the paper and to the editor for a smooth and constructive review process.

Plasmid errors are more common than you might think.

~30% of plasmids received by Addgene have sequence discrepancies that need depositor feedback.

Be prepared to catch & prevent errors by watching the Addgene × Plasmidsaurus webinar, now available on demand!

81. Bioshock Remastered

Yeah, "remastered" and it has all sorts of bugs never in the original. Still the loveable, narrative-driven FPS from early 360 days. Combat is clunky, though. Switching between plasmids and weapons so constantly wasn't my favorite, but I got used to it in time again.

Of the two plasmids within their host, the more chromosome-like symbiosis plasmid showed extensive regulatory and metabolic interdependence with the chromosome and significant fitness contribution in-planta. This is cool for flagellar genes and in-planta association of motility with the plasmids.

Out now in @natcomms.nature.com: We found a plasmid in a preterm infant’s gut microbiome that’s 1.58 million base pairs long, about 30X the size of a typical E. coli plasmid. Then we found its relatives in hundreds of microbiomes worldwide. Read on to learn more about the elusive pMEGAs! 🧵
