A plume of moisture extending from Hurricane Simon helped fuel severe thunderstorms that fired up in the Great Plains last night.

The water vapor from the tropical cyclone will continue to enhance a heavy rainfall, flooding, and severe weather risk in the Southern Plains today.

Oh I did a tiny bit more on this since that day, with some more divisions in the water, a a quick embergen-made boiling vapor plume texture on a couple of planes, and a bit of lens dirt. Still just messing around, but if I add more atmospheric vapor stuff this is probably good enough quality.

SPC Oct 9, 2026 0100 UTC Day 1 Convective Outlook
SPC 0100Z Day 1 Outlook Day 1 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0758 PM CDT Thu Oct 08 2026 Valid 090100Z - 091200Z ...THERE IS A MARGINAL RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE FLORIDA PENINSULA AND IOWA... ...SUMMARY... Localized severe thunderstorms may occur across the west-central part of the Florida Peninsula and across parts of Iowa tonight. ...Florida Peninsula... Water vapor imagery currently shows a plume of mid-level moisture associated with Hurricane Isaias from the central Gulf of America northeastward across much of the Southeast. Thunderstorms associated with Isaias will move inland across the Florida Peninsula this evening into tonight. Over the southern half of Florida, the RAP shows MLCAPE in the 1000 to 1500 J/kg range. The most favorable zone for rotating storms will be along the northern edge of the stronger instability near and to the southeast of Tampa Bay. RAP forecast soundings in the area have veering winds with height in the lowest 3 km with enough low-level shear for an isolated tornado threat. ...Iowa... At mid-levels, west-northwesterly flow is located over the central and northern U.S. A subtle shortwave trough appears to be moving through South Dakota. Lift will be maximized in the mid Missouri Valley ahead of this feature, along the far eastern edge of a central Plains low-level speed max. As low-level flow increases this evening, elevated storms will continue to develop over western and central Iowa. RAP forecast soundings in west-central Iowa show a sharp temperature inversion at low-levels, with steep lapse rates above 900 mb. The resulting MUCAPE is forecast to be in the 1500 to 2000 J/kg range. This combined with about 50 knots of effective shear should be enough for an isolated hail threat. ..Broyles.. 10/09/2026 Read more

Enceladus’ diverse ice grains may start as similar ocean water. Slow freezing separated salts in laboratory droplets; faster freezing kept them more evenly mixed. doi.org/hcknjd

A Significant Atmospheric River Hits the Pacific Northwest
**The first significant atmospheric river of autumn has arrived.** The satellite imagery tonight is impressive. For example, consider the water vapor image from the NOAA GOES-West satellite. A magnificent moisture plume from the Central Pacific into our region. Here is another. The forecast of the **transport of water vapor** by the European Center model for tonight at 10 PM is shown below. The atmospheric river is moving huge amounts of water vapor into the Pacific Northwest, with the center of the plume directed to the northern Olympics and southern Vancouver Island. The plume of moisture will be forced to rise by our regional terrain, producing substantial windward precipitation. Below is the prediction of the total precipitation through 5 AM Wednesday (from the European Center forecast). Southern BC and northern WA get hit hard. **The UW, ultra-high-resolution forecast for the same period shows the details (below).** As much as 3-5 inches on the western slopes of the Olympics and central/northern Cascades. Substantial amounts reach the eastern slopes of the Cascades. Nice rain shadow over central Puget Sound. I bet I can get away with biking to the UW tomorrow! If you had refrained from watering your garden... go ahead. Probably time to find your umbrella as well. September will end up with normal precipitation for most of the region.

I'm calling this shit "Hope slop". Images with captions designed to make you think there has been a technological paradigm shift that can address climate action. I'm seeing it much more frequently here and it's invariably lies or half truths. If they don't link a source it's probably bullshit.

Full loop from yesterday afternoon to (about) present time. That one rogue plume of water vapor coming off the coast helped initiate this storm!

Aviation's first powered model flight wasn't in America. It was 1848, in a lace factory loft in Chard, Somerset, when John Stringfellow's steam-driven model flew off a wire. Somerset In Verse – Exmoor To Levels In Poetry has a poem for that too.

One thing that surprised me: I don’t see Roth’s #HST work on #Europa’s #plume/water-vapor signatures cited here, nor Saur et al. or much from the Europa #SpacePlasma community.

Not fatal for their thermo-fluid model I guess, …

#OTD in 1999 Lunar Prospector ended its mission with the spacecraft deliberately impacting the lunar surface near the south pole. It was hoped that the impact would liberate water vapor from the suspected ice deposits and that the plume would be detectable from Earth, however, no plume was observed.

Ironically, part of the problem is likely that upper atmospheric chemistry was often boring for so long.

Prior to Hunga-Tonga, a lot of stratospheric chemistry hadn't changed much for decades, which left little incentive to build new platforms to continue those measurements beyond Aura.

While the plume was in the lower stratosphere it may have contributed a slight global warming (e.g. ~0.05° C); however, this effect is expected to diminish as the water vapor moved higher and sulfur aerosols from the same eruption may have masked any initial warming.

The water vapor plume began at the location of Hunga Tonga (~20° S latitude), but subsequent dynamics carried most of the water vapor higher and towards both poles.

After the initial plume settled at ~25 km of altitude, the water vapor has mostly migrated to higher elevations.

Ordinarily, the tropopause (~12-15 km high) greatly limits water vapor from reaching the stratosphere, so the stratosphere is very dry (only a few ppm of water).

These large scale mid CONUS cyclones are getting to be a regular thing this month. Another one with a large plume of southern plains dust (seen on the real color imagery) getting drawn up across IA today that fueled "dirty rain" across the area. Impressive circulation on the water vapor too... 🌀

No that is normal, high level winds give the water vapor steam plume the wiggles. And you get that bubble since the sun had just set and it illuminates all the gases the 2nd stage firing toss into the atmosphere.
