re: last repost, i was curious about the relationship between the barbie/inanna story as underworld journey and the “plow my vulva” bit, so i turned to judy grahn’s _eruptions of inanna: justice, gender, and erotic power_
As her poetty reveals, these clements are all part of the ritu. als of goddess Inanna. And this sequence of events seems to have become a major mythic story, "The Descent of Inanna into the Underworld? When the goddess is stripped down to naked. ness and struck by her elder sister before she undergoes a ritual three-day death, followed by resurrection and emergence with new powers, Inanna's descent myth replicates the seclusion of the maiden at menarche. In some Middle Eastern and eastern European families, the mother strikes her daughter across the face on learning she has begun menstruating for the first time. The women I have spoken to about this do not know why this custom persists; it's just a gesture handed down over the genera-tions. At the very least it shocks the girl into paying attention. Other correlations with menarche include a prohibition about eating in the below-world, and another forbidding any men from going near the maiden in her rituals. In the myth, no male gods I'm guessing that the Sumerian poet-storytellers, steeped for generations in practices of puberty seclusions that equated with visiting the womb of creation and being reborn, wrote their stories in a larger context, with a single deity representing "women' and more broadly everyone, and a plot of death and resurrection pertaining to all civic and natural life. Heroes went on journeys to slay dragons or locate the secret to eternal life. In perhaps an "annual menstruation," the goddess Inanna went on a descent journey into the womb of the earth, the below-world that, following her resurrection, gave her powers to command life, death, and judgment over rebirth. She used this Eye of Death in rendering the fate of her lover Dumuzi, as well as Shukaletuda, the errant gardener- setting his fate that he could not be reborn. The Sumerian language was written in two different dialects; one of these was Emesal, a specialized "women's language" used in writing love poetry, hymns, and proverbs, especially when the voice of a goddess or woman is speaking in the poem. This was a spoken language as well, and one of Inanna's entertainments was "to see that women amuse themselves by speaking children's language, to see that children amuse themselves by using women's language." Emesal was also the dialect of choice for a poem in which a cow is speaking, and again when a temple wall is speaking. Love poems about Inanna's passion, for which she is rightly renowned, would have been written in Emesal, and this suggests they were composed by women. The poems celebrate women's bodies, feelings, and sexuality She leaned back against the apple tree. When she leaned against the apple tree, her vulva was wondrous to behold. Rejoicing at her wondrous vulva, the young woman Inanna applauded herself. This next poem, translated by Betty Meadot, gives us some sense of what that wonder was about: where I'm coming from my vulva is the power place . . I rule with cunt power I see with cunt eyes . .. This is where I'm coming from .. With my vulva I live right here in this soft slit I live right here The celebration of her vulva had made me wonder whether Inanna was ever portrayed with a clitoris. My puzzlement increased after I found a photo online of a bas-relief of Ishtar lying naked and flat on her marriage bed, with a pubic triangle outline in the clay, and at the narrow end between her thighs an unmistakable little evocative knob.

Why is it in vogue to hate on rhyming poetry/form poetry? I write a little of all kinds, but the prevailing sentiment, especially in contests and journals is that if it rhymes, it's doggerel. How did we get here when some of the greatest writing in history rhymes? #poetty
