Lots of the modern sites probably use something like pokeapi.co to obtain all of that info. As far as where they get it from, I guess it is mostly data mining, otherwise it would be incredibly difficult and time consuming to obtain all of that info. Probably the most data mined games ever lol.

PokéAPI is the best-run free API there is — a decade of keyless, CORS-open canon.
But one Pokémon detail is a 290 KB response, the list gives name+url only (a 20-card grid = 21 requests), and list search is silently ignored.
A Pokédex you control, in two curls:
PokéAPI alternative: a compact Pokédex you control, in two curls
PokéAPI is superb — but one Pokémon detail is 290 KB, the list is name+url pairs (every grid tutorial ships an N+1 Promise.all), and list search is silently ignored. Extract 30 compact records via their own GraphQL beta, import as db.json, and get substring search, 3.4 KB 20-card grids via ?select=, sorting, their exact count/results envelope, real writes, and failure drills. Free, no signup.

There was a time when I wanted to build an Etrian Odyssey API similar to the PokeAPI, partially because I love those games but also because I wanted to call it nAPIer #EtrianOdyssey

🤗 Find the Pokemon you are w. PokéAPI, your resume & embeddings
_This is a submission for Weekend Challenge: Passion Edition_ ## ❔ What I Built These two last weeks, my team mates started to to use Claude Code together with they yearly review : 📓 Versionner et builder l'eBook de son Entretien Annuel d'Evaluation sur Git(Hub) adriens adriens adriens Follow Mar 25 '24 ## 📓 Versionner et builder l'eBook de son Entretien Annuel d'Evaluation sur Git(Hub) #markdown #pandoc #ebook #ai 2 reactions 11 comments 6 min read **to discover which Pokemon they are... and why**. I found that really really fun... and started to wonder > if I could automate that with only onPrem resources, with embeddings, ML... only with a simple laptop without GPU, a simple core i5 and 8 Gib. And of course, only with pure Open Source software ❣️ What you'll discover below is how I started to prototype it and make it happen. ## 🍿 Demo ## 🤗 Code The whole code source is available as a HF Space, see rastadidi/resume-to-pokemon for more... or to play wth it 🤓 ## 🧰 How I Built It To achieve this first prototype I : 1. **Used the data** I already prepared with my registry.jsonresume.org/adriens 2. **Bundled dataset (built once).** `build_dataset.py` fetches every species from the PokeAPI — name, types, base stats, sprite, genus and English Pokedex flavor text. For each Pokemon it also derives a **professional-archetype profile** from its types and stat spread (e.g. a Steel type → _"a disciplined, precise, robust engineer of structured systems"_), so career resumes and monster biology meet in the same trait vocabulary. Description + profile are embedded with BAAI/bge-m3 and committed as `data/pokemon.json` + `data/embeddings.npy` — so the app makes **no PokeAPI calls at runtime**. 3. **Resume → phrases.** Sections that carry semantic signal — `basics.summary`, `skills`, `work`/`volunteer`, `projects`, `interests` — are each turned into a short phrase and embedded with the same model. (Administrative sections like education, certificates and languages are skipped.) 4. **Retrieve → rerank.** Cosine similarity over the embeddings retrieves a shortlist of the closest Pokemon; a cross-encoder (BAAI/bge-reranker-v2-m3) then re-scores the (resume, Pokemon) pairs jointly for much sharper precision than cosine alone. The tool explains _why_ by quoting the matched resume phrase and the Pokemon's own profile + Pokedex text. 5. **Ranking + relative fit.** Pokemon are ranked by a blend of the rerank match and their base stats (adjustable). Because a broad resume matches many Pokemon similarly, raw scores cluster tightly and are unreadable — so the reported score is a **relative fit** : rerank scores are standardized across the shortlist and spread through a sigmoid, so the top clearly stands out (~100%) and the tail drops off. It's a fit _relative to the candidate pool_ , not an absolute probability. The two best-fitting **types** are derived from the same shortlist, so they always agree with the ranked Pokemon. 6. **Calibrated confidence.** Instead of a raw similarity number, a read-out reports how far the top match _stands out from the field_ (a z-score over the shortlist), flagging decisive vs. diffuse, multi-type profiles. Type scores and the ranked Pokemon are derived from the _same_ reranked shortlist, so the "best-fit typing" always agrees with the cards.

Oh and your website uses PokeAPI which literally steals and scrapes all of its information from Serebii like LMAO.

Serebii is bad and a terrible website apparently but not bad enough to steal the info from there to fuel your shit website mate.
I know I'm terminally late to this internet drama by over a literal month but you can't title your video "Every Pokemon Website Sucks, So I Made A Good One." And directly call out Serebii in the thumbnail only to have this "Good" website only have info up to Gen 7. Like wtf are you on about mate fr

2b. PokeAPI is really no different than a wiki like bulbapedia in my eyes. It’s just a community putting together information in an open source format so others can take it and display in a way they’d like. I contributed to it multiple times by hand writing out info.
May 31, 2026 at 5:11 PM
2a. PokeAPI is basically just a compilation of .csv files people put together with information sourced from anywhere they can get it. Some is bulbapedia, some is serebii, most of the stuff is actually from Veekuns database until gen 7, when they switched to using Kaphotics leaks.
May 31, 2026 at 5:11 PM
I want to be clear about two things regarding my site;

1. It is not vibe coded. My friend who helped is a full stack dev. Just finalizing the UI and features took us 4 months, we started in like February.

2. PokeAPI is not like constantly scraping serebii or bulbapedia or something.
May 31, 2026 at 5:11 PM
You say the data location is important in your argument against serebii.

You then say missing location data on pokeAPI/your site is "minor" and "niche".

You then say "i've made [...] the best old gen pokemon game information website".

This is downplaying issues with your site.

If the video is promoting PokeAPI, I saying that the blisy website, that admittedly lacks important info, is "the best" for these gens of pokemon. That's bad promo for PokeAPI.

I'm also not familiar with ad sense, so I wouldn't use it on my live website I'm promoing.
May 31, 2026 at 1:09 AM
I see the video as a sort of promotion of pokeapi so we can have more people submit and complete the website faster. I believe Blisy is doing their best to limit how many ads show, I am not too familiar with how AdSense works myself
May 31, 2026 at 12:55 AM
It also lacks support for other languages, at the very least you should be able to search for the Pokémon in other languages, ESPECIALLY if you’re using PokéAPI, and they just didn’t implement that
May 31, 2026 at 12:38 AM
i do agree that other sites have their own flaws. i also think the post release ad update looks much better on mobile now than it did at launch, and it will definitely only continue to improve in time with work to it and the PokeAPI, just as you stated
May 30, 2026 at 10:12 PM
The content isn't better! In your video you say your website is the best website for older generation info, minutes after you talk about how pokeapi didn't have "niche" and "minor" info like in-game trades for GSC/RBY. C'mon now.
May 30, 2026 at 8:33 PM
oops, one more thing: the Gen 1 - Gen 7 info isn't even complete! towards the end of the video, im a blisy starts talking about all the info that isn't in the pokeapi, saying it's more "niche" and "minor" data, including IN GAME TRADES FROM RBY & GSC that they themselves had to add!
May 30, 2026 at 5:41 PM
it's also ridiculous to be like "this is a resource built for competitive players" and have your pokemon info top out at Gen 7. I don't think this is a PokeAPI issue, as they make reference to Gen 8 on their site, so Idk what's going on there.
May 30, 2026 at 5:14 PM
Just watched the video and am blown away--I'm not alone in thinking this!! I've been tinkering with my own database-style website for Gen 9 and Champions using PokeAPI data too, but I was aiming to create a website *template* that ROMhackers could edit, so every hack has a serebii :)
