Dancing with the worms—a compilation of our favorite Alciopid worm dance moves. 🕺🏽

Alciopid polychaetes have large, complex eyes with corneas, irises, lenses, and other structures that give them excellent vision. 👀

Syllid polychaetes. Because you can barely get weirder. bsky.app/profile/sara...
Polychaetes do well in the weirdo department. Behold Ramisyllis, living in the labyrinth of sponge channels and consequently having adopted a branching body form. Or Exogone, who grows its babies from its feet. Because why not.

Inverts are generally weird, polychaetes are definitely weird, & spoon worms are the weirdos of the polychaetes. They're cylindrical & soft-bodied with a non-retractable proboscis which can be rolled into a scoop-shape to feed. Here's Ochetostoma baronii, found while snorkeling in Baja. #InverteFest

like, the 8 billion people who have never heard of polychaetes would never search for or buy those images, the 5 people who care can immediately tell they're shit

These intertidal celebrities are polychaetes in the genus Owenia. I love the artistic use of sand and shell particles to create the tube they live in. And the articulation between sections rivals the best medieval armor. Actual speed. 🦑 #marinelife #polycheates #Alaska

Merry Christmas to; Spirobranchus giganteus, the Christmas tree worm! Named for their bright colorful crowns that resemble artificial trees, these polychaetes live a sessile life boared into hard corals.

I'm super excited about these worms, so this will be a long thread!

I have just found out about #noVERMber so here we go. This ceramics piece I made was inspired by Christmas tree and feather duster worms, which are #polychaetes. The photo by Becky A. Bauer at the end shows the real worms! #SciArt #ceramics #pottery #handbuiltpottery

More wormy facts 🧪:
Polychaetes have survived five mass extinctions. the earliest known polychaetes were discovered n the Burgess Shale, dating ~505 million yrs ago (Cambrian period). In the yrs 2 come, Earth witnessed 5 mass extinction, one of which killed ~96% of all marine species.
