#Rocky shores are hard to study as many species hide in crevices. #Cobble-filled collectors recorded 181 species in #Subtidal habitats (#BayOfFundy), with #Biodiversity patterns varying most at the smallest and largest scales investigated.

And yet another new face in our #GoenomiX team.

🥳 Welcome, Varuni Mishra!

🔬 Research: Polychaetes, Syllid biology and evolution, regeneration and transcriptomics

🔭 Looking forward to: Learn new techniques (e.g. RNAseq & in-situ hybridisation) to study the Wnt pathway in Syllid regeneration.

‘Die Naturwissenschaften’ is not just a physics journal. Just prior to Lise Meitner’s 1927 article (qt post) they published this article, “The Problem of Sex Determination in *Bonellia*.
A Summary & an Attempt at a New Interpretation. By J. Seiler.”
Bonellia are a genus of marine annelid worms.

This can include crustaceans such as shrimp or crabs, a wide range of worms such as polychaetes, and lots of mollusks, including mussels and snails. (I spent a summer picking polychaetes out of preserved samples from the bottom of Cape Cod Bay.)

A fantastic mid conference trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Messel Pit, a former oil shale quarry full of amazingly preserved fossils from the Eocene. Followed by an excursion to Lohrberg, a great opportunity for conference participants to get to know each other and chat about polychaetes

It could be an evolutionary remnant of a predatory ancestor, or an opportunistic strategy. This group is incredibly diverse, from filter feeders to detrivores to predators.
Breadth and composition of polychaete diets and the importance of diatoms to species and trophic guilds - Helgoland Marine Research
Polychaetes are important components of trophic webs in sandy beaches, mainly due to their abundance and diversity of feeding modes, acting as detritivores or primary/secondary consumers. We character...

For real. I always get excited when there's a little purple tossed in or when they find those glittery rainbow polychaetes. Green is also another color I've only seen a handful of time

Nothing compared to Galeta, though the polychaetes were out in full force! I’d take chiton over silica any day

It's #InternationalPolychaeteDay! Polychaetes are also called Bristle Worms and most species live in the ocean. There are over 10,000 species known.

To celebrate, here are some Gossamer Worm keychains I made for #InsertAnInvert2024. The segments are jointed so they wiggle!

Time for our annual celebration of our 'hairy' worm friends as today is #InternationalPolychaeteDay

We stan Elsie Sexton's drawings of Plymouth polychaetes so much that we had to share some more again this year 🪱
