"accidentally or deliberately introduced" -- I enjoy the idea of Polynesians seeding Pacific islands with rodent friends. (surely not all of those breeding populations were accidental, there were Friends of Rats involved, and I salute them from across time and space)

I’m now laughing thinking about how we celebrate Mallory who tried to climb Mt Everest because “it was there” and who died attempting it but…..”those Polynesians were just wandering around the pacific on boats and chanced on AoNZ by luck”
Colonial thinking.

European seafarers were limited before the invention of clocks to determine latitude. Polynesians used astral navigation centuries earlier to become what Sir Peter Buck called the Vikings of the Sunrise.

He will forgetting to thank James Gunn during his speech BUT will shout out Polynesians everywhere. it will be a viral sensation but the Champion of the Universe will Poochie-out (as it were) and return to his home planet off-screen.

The real mystery behind Moana: after 1,700 years, why did Polynesians suddenly sail east?
New evidence suggests a massive centuries-long drought may be part of the answer.

Today is International Poke Day

Today honors poke (pronounced poh-kay), the traditional Hawaiian dish of diced raw fish. Native Polynesians originally prepared poke hundreds of years ago using cubed raw reef fish seasoned with sea salt, seaweed (limu) and crushed candlenut (inamona).

were basically quarantined for years
Same with Polynesians
So at what point would someone that hasn't been quarantined started a pandemic?
When did immunities diverge enough for that?
After the very first pandemic in the old world caused by livestock?
That would be my guess at least

i guess there were recent discoveries of denisovan bones found near taiwan which were comparatively large (6ft+ & 200#) vs neanderthals, which just makes me wonder is that why polynesians are bigger today? it was from that austronesian area that it is believed polynesia was populated, right? 🤔

The discovery of 🇺🇸, though, wasn't by Columbus. It was discovered earlier by the Norse/Vikings, or possibly by the Polynesians.
(Then there's the ancestors of the Native Americans, of course.)

I much prefer to use immigrant. I’ve had British and South African immigrants refer to themselves as expats and in the same conversation refer to Indians and Polynesians as immigrants. They instinctively used the term to lift themselves above the brown immigrants.

Don’t think they appreciated it

Not related but also more recent and yet there is still some academic doubt that Polynesians during the extensive ocean expansion period reached South America (when they already reached Easter Island) instead thinking that ocean currents carried sweet potatoes to Polynesia by accident

The Hawaiians have long believed that Japanese fishermen and Spanish shipwreck survivors had previously visited, intermarrying with local people. Hawaiian King David Kalākaua wrote in 1888 that it “had been pretty satisfactorily established” that a Spanish galleon arrived as early as 1555.

Nic: Are you pirates?
Polynesians: How dare you. Of course we're not pirates.
Nic: Oh, good, that's a relief.
Polynesians: We ARE going to kill you, though. Get out of our waters.
Nic: noooooo come onnnnn

Deep-ocean voyaging, celestial navigation — the Polynesians were masters at it. Infamously known for wayfinding, Polynesian people voyaged across the vast blue Pacific Ocean basin using the sun, stars, waves, and nature around them.

Watched "Chief of War", produced by Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa'a Sibbett, today.
It was outstanding. I am hoping for a season two. Actually, about ten seasons. Hawaii history is so rich.

From the landing of the original Polynesians to present time. Show the good parts and the ugly parts.

New research from French Polynesia explores how archaeological “backdirt” became a resource for local gardens, prompting a broader reflection on community archaeology and the tangible benefits archaeological research can provide.
