2. Chirostyoidea (Chirostylidae, Eumunididae, Kiwaidae, Sternostylidae) AND Aeglidae AND Lomis

So it's one of the other branches of things Becoming Crab; like technically most insects aren't bugs because there are true bugs, if you're being taxonomical.

For #SciArtSeptember prompt claws: A porcelain crab! 🐡🧪🦀Looks like a crab, has crab in its name…is it a crab? Nope. False crab. Porcelain crabs, Neopetrolisthes maculatus are decapod crustaceans in the family Porcellanidae, which resemble true crabs but are in fact closer related to squat lobsters.🧵

Absolutely not on my bingo card: finding out from @karenho.bsky.social that the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corp) made a video about carcinization, including a copy of my (uncredited 🫠) figure!?

Aside from that, the video has very cute footage of crabs and is fun 🦀

With the end of the month, #CrabAZ is truly over. I hope they helped distract you. As @upulie.bsky.social requested a megathread, I made a carcinization tracker, labeling featured genera (living in plaintext, fossil in italic).

Megathread follows, now back to your irregularly scheduled crabs! 🦀🧪🦑

Friday the 13th = how about a crab and carcinization AMA?*

I should be working on job applications, so ask about crabs instead!

In honor of CRAB DAY, what else could I post about but carcinization! 🧪

I am working (on crabs) but will try to answer science questions today and this evening!

The filter feeding porcelain crabs can be exceptionally abundant, particularly these Lissoporcellana found on the reefs around the Houtman Abrolhos Islands.

When I go tide pooling, I often spot Porcellanidae with their flat bodies tucked into rock crevices.
They’re so quick and drop their limbs so easily that catching one intact is quite a struggle.
