1. Galatheoidea (Galatheidae, Munididae, Munidopsidae AND Porcellanidae)

2. Chirostyoidea (Chirostylidae, Eumunididae, Kiwaidae, Sternostylidae) AND Aeglidae AND Lomis

"Porcelain crabs are decapod crustaceans in the widespread family Porcellanidae, which superficially resemble true crabs." - Wikipedia

So it's one of the other branches of things Becoming Crab; like technically most insects aren't bugs because there are true bugs, if you're being taxonomical.

When I go tide pooling, I often spot Porcellanidae with their flat bodies tucked into rock crevices.
They’re so quick and drop their limbs so easily that catching one intact is quite a struggle.

Absolutely not on my bingo card: finding out from @karenho.bsky.social that the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corp) made a video about carcinization, including a copy of my (uncredited 🫠) figure!?

Aside from that, the video has very cute footage of crabs and is fun 🦀

What looks like a chalkboard drawing of a phylogeny of crabs, labeling Brachyura, Anomura, and Meiura, with the words crab or not crab. In the next image you'll see this is exactly copied from my figure, based on orientation and that they included my character mapping for some reason while removing the labels? My actual figure. Gross morphology in the convergent evolution of representative true crabs (Brachyura), porcelain crabs (Porcellanidae), hairy stone crabs (Lomisidae), and king crabs (Lithodoidea). Losses (open circles) observed in frog crabs (Raninoidea). Topology simplified from our previous papers. Body plan features are assumed to be present in the common ancestor of each marked lineage but may vary considerably within each group. The filter feeding porcelain crabs can be exceptionally abundant, particularly these Lissoporcellana found on the reefs around the Houtman Abrolhos Islands.

With the end of the month, #CrabAZ is truly over. I hope they helped distract you. As @upulie.bsky.social requested a megathread, I made a carcinization tracker, labeling featured genera (living in plaintext, fossil in italic).

Megathread follows, now back to your irregularly scheduled crabs! 🦀🧪🦑
Modification of Fig 2 from Wolfe et al 2021. As described below, but with the names of genera featured in the A-Z month listed next to their phylogenetic position. Living species in plain text, fossils in italics. a freshwater shrimp in the family Atyidae on a moss/detritus covered rock underwater a flat porcelain crab (Porcellanidae) chilling out of water on top of some squishy animal of some kind a sand colored crab hiding on the sand with its eye stalks poking up out of the shallow water (Macrophthalmus banzai I think) a tiny hermit crab shuttling along - probably Paguridae

For #SciArtSeptember prompt claws: A porcelain crab! 🐡🧪🦀Looks like a crab, has crab in its name…is it a crab? Nope. False crab. Porcelain crabs, Neopetrolisthes maculatus are decapod crustaceans in the family Porcellanidae, which resemble true crabs but are in fact closer related to squat lobsters.🧵
