Loving God,

We pray for your blessing on Bride Valley and Chesil, for all those who minister there, including the Revd Andrew Rawding.

We pray for all those who attend Litton Cheney Thorner’s, Burton Bradstock and Portesham Primary Schools.

Amen

"Soon Brenda reached a huge chimney. 'Why does this chimney not have a house attached to it?' she wondered. 'Perhaps the house is underground and extremely big?' Realising that cattle had little business with chimneys anyhow, she decided it was best to not think about it too hard and move on."

The Hardy Monument, at the highest point on Black Down, #Dorset. It is a memorial to Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, of #HMSVictory and Trafalgar fame, who lived in nearby in Portesham. His daughters laid the foundation stone on the 39th anniversary of the battle.

Thanks for the repost Samantha 🤗 And yes I love a water rill too. Is the duck race still going in Portesham? 🤔🦆

Yaaaas! I love these rills as water features.

Probably because it reminds me of the Portesham Duck Race when I was a child.

Greylag west over Bridging Camp this morning thurs.
2 Linnets there yesterday likely migrants given general winter absence here. Also the wintering Whimbrel still.
On Sunday green sandpiper at Portesham withy bed + groups of 5 & 3 stonechats on the downs there seemed like passage birds.

Yes, the Portesham strainer is more pan-shaped than the brilliant bowl strainer from Chettle 👍

(also yes the Portesham burial is very interesting, it's going in the book!)

They're found in burials a lot. This reconstruction of one from Portesham (by Craig Williams) has a woman of the Durotriges with a strainer as well as a bronze mirror, tweezers, brooches, iron knife, two pots an ear scoop and joints of
pork and mutton

A good assemblage for the Iron Age afterlife

The history of the part of the area I know well (Abbotsbury/Portesham) is that these were estates belonging to the Catholic Church that were given to cronies of Henry VIII. So the villages are part an parcel of the estate.
June 28, 2025 at 12:21 PM
If it's the same as Portesham it's a 99 year lease.
June 28, 2025 at 12:13 PM
Abbotsbury and Portesham in the same area are also privately owned since the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Arundel in Sussex is also. There are many other historic villages that are like this all over the South of England and East Anglia.

I met @earthworkbec.bsky.social last October in the rain! I took a look at the 1841 census for Little Bredy (all ag labs) & Portesham where there's a curious family of builders, carpenters & glaziers but no "retired brickmaker"!! 🤣
