The mid-century modern porticos of #HamOnt

Turin is a city best experienced on foot—although often, one hardly realises they’re outdoors. Stretching 18 kilometres through the historic centre, its network of covered porticos—elegant arcades lined with shops, cafés, and galleries—creates one of Europe’s most extensive pedestrian environments.🧵

A carved Maya limestone column, covered in intricate reliefs of spirals, scrolls, and stylized figures.

Once part of a monumental architectural setting, pieces like this helped support entrances and porticos.

No como los otros hechos, que son pórticos, por ejemplo.

Yet Turin’s porticos are not relics—they remain living infrastructure used by tens of thousands each day. As the city moves toward a more sustainable future, its centuries-old arcades quietly demonstrate the best pedestrian design is often already built—timeless, human-scaled, and context-specific.🔚

I guess you don’t have to install bus shelters if your whole city is porticos.

1840s Classical style tenements, possibly designed by Charles Wilson, on Hill Street in the Garnethill area of Glasgow. The projecting Roman-arched porticos are an unusual addition to the more typical Glasgow tenement design.

A painter at his easel under the porticos of Piazza Santo Stefano depicts both the portico and the basilica on his canvas, Bologna, Italy, 2014.

The porticos date back to the 17th century, when Savoy rulers began shaping Turin into a royal capital. Architects designed a city where pedestrians could walk dry and dignified from palace to palace. First as arcaded walkways for the aristocracy, then as public corridors for merchants and shoppers.

A row of Classical style porticos on late Georgian/early Victorian townhouses on Woodside Terrace in the West End of Glasgow. Designed by George Smith, they were built between 1835 and 1842.

This would be a case of Trump's design choices for the ballroom metastasizing to the White House proper.

Plans for the ballroom call for Corinthian columns, not the Ionic columns that have stood for 200 years on the North and South Porticos.
For nearly 200 years, these iconic — and Ionic — columns have welcomed visitors to the White House.

Trump has privately mused about changing them to his preferred style, and now his top arts commissioner has proposed a plan to do exactly that.

The head of a federal arts commission is proposing the more ornate Corinthian style for the nearly 200-year-old columns at the building’s front entrance
