and this was borne out by postwar studies. the effectiveness of bombing campaign was significantly exaggerated

Amazon have, with no fanfare, dumped a load more studio-era masterpieces onto Prime Video, including the *restoration* of The Big Parade (1925), the little-seen Dick Powell/Lizabeth Scott noir, Pitfall (1948), and Mankiewicz’s great film about love and postwar mores, A Letter to Three Wives (1947).

Paweł Pawlikowski’s ‘Fatherland’ follows the writer through a postwar Germany still haunted by genocide. It is a restrained yet devastating masterpiece.

Detroit was still selling warmed-over '42s in the early postwar years.

Ford's first true postwar car wouldn't happen until '49.

"GODZILLA: MINUS ZERO" (full review pending) - excellent, go see it, try to be unspoiled.

"What if Japan's top historical ugly-cry filmmaker remade postwar Japanese monster movies with ultra-realistic human reactions/consequences?" turns out to be a resilient formula. My eyes bugged out of my skull

Tbh we had early public choice theory and game theory but tbh the practical problems with democracy weren’t really articulated until the postwar era

Okay there’s gotta already be like a postwar mechsplo story about a hound abandoned by the empire and left to fend for herself in the wilds and becoming like a local feral cryptid tale, right? I assume that’s been done before?

This is basically the entire story of postwar America, given public investment in basic research enabled almost every breakthrough over the last 75 years (that big corporations are now charging us for)

And now we're gutting that research funding and expecting *that* to "boost innovation"
when artists said this in 2022 they were laughing at us, so 🤷‍♀️

(but realtalk, I'm glad more people are waking up to it now)

My old neighborhood of smallish postwar bungalows and 2-over-2s had to close the streets on Halloween because the place was sidewalk to sidewalk trick or treaters
Halloween: America's annual reminder that cities, density, and walkable neighborhoods are good, actually.

Mario Giacomelli.

He recognition for the raw expressiveness of his images, which echoed many of the concerns of postwar Neorealist film and Existentialist literature, with their interests in the conditions of everyday life and in ordinary people as thinking, feeling individuals.

Oh and look who isn't invited to the negotiations for 'Postwar". That would be the Ukraine itself. So you can see the hand that is being played here.

Italy's postwar communist party was the biggest in the West and Moscow-funded, so the soft spot is real. But Meloni is actually holding the line now, and the aid packages do keep coming, quietly.

This isn't true - capitalism performs best and is at its stablest when combined with redistributive welfare systems, as in the postwar USA and ongoing in Northern Europe. The current set of blinkered US hypercapitalists are acting against their own interests as well as society's!

But also, your second paragraph says this, which is just factually wrong:

"Benefits spending as a share of GDP more than doubled from the postwar years to a post-financial-crisis peak of 12.3 per cent."

12.3% is lower than in 2010, which was post-financial crisis.

🧪⚛️ Yep. The NSF was founded by a country that had shown, between New Deal agencies like the CCC, WPA, and TVA, wartime efforts like the Manhattan Project and the Rad Lab, and postwar efforts like the Berlin Airlift, that it is possible for government to understand logistics and be effective.
Worth remembering it took about 5 years to establish the US National Science Foundation.

It's predecessor organizations, as was typical before WW2, was dissolved essentially at the end of WW2.

National research organizations were regularly formed and disbanded on 5-ish year timescales before that.

W managed to consolidate on the strength of the greatest national security failure in the postwar era. he built a bipartisan fortress that looked invulnerable for a thousand days.

now he's painting quasi-Hockney portraits of his feelings of inadequacy. (not ghostly Iraqi children though.)
