Built in 1772, the lighthouse stands near the westernmost point of continental Europe atop a cliff 143m (462') over the Atlantic Ocean. It was one of six lighthouses whose construction was ordered by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the despotic de facto ruler of the #PortugueseEmpire, in 1758.
