#post-glacial
I've been through there a few times. Pretty country and a lot of fun for someone who doesn't see many post-glacial landscapes (rock nerd stuff).

Paleobotonists hypothesize the species may have emerged prior to the Pleistocene glaciations, during a prolonged inter-glacial period, or retreat of continental ice sheets c. 12,000 years ago. The earliest confirmed sub-fossil remains identified as Rosa pimpinellifolia are post-glacial.

Autumn In The Bernina Range (2026)

(On our most recent repeat pilgrimage in this truly humbling group of mountains. These trees and bushes are growing near the sharp edge of a large glacial side moraine, just behind, the valley is dropping down almost […]

Whether you’re rambling on a river, meandering along the steady incline of Going-to-the-Sun Road, or awaiting the approach of a distant mountain goat, Glacier National Park in Montana is a place that reveals itself to you at its own whim, in its own good time.
Life at a Glacial Pace | The Saturday Evening Post
You can do a lot at Glacier National Park…and you can do it all slowly.

"Founded by Finn Alfred Ramstrom as an estancia in 1917, this remote property (the gravel access road alone is 75km) is in a beautiful setting sheltered from the fierce glacial winds by knarled sequoias. Power is provided by a hydraulic turbine." […]

Leaving Bernina (2026)

(One of many "penultimate" looks back[1] to where we came down from on our most recent tour[2] in this mountain range. The path comes through the steep rocky cliffs and brown slopes above the moraine on the very right...)

[Article: F-Day plus 266]

It's been 266 days since we were flooded out of our home, and progress on repairs still seems to be glacial. It's still unclear if we'll be back by Christmas as delays and excuses continue to stack up. But the most-tragic thing is that working-around this temporary […]

Along Lassen Highway in the Volcanic National Park, there was this old guy just hanging out. Rather bold of him. But a nice place for sunning.

@colinburgess The short answer seems to be that we don’t know yet. There’s a good review of the (many) hypotheses in a 2022 review by Theunis Piersma and colleagues (link below). It’s not that bar-tailed godwits migrated a shorter overall distance during the glacial maxima, as the Beringia part […]

Fellaria, Diptych (2025)

Two things of note here (same place, opposite directions):

1) A famous dam in the Italian Alps, constructed 1958-64 using pioneering techniques which led to the development of roller-compacted concrete for dam constructions […]

Green Bay Trail in Glencoe on a foggy day last week. Maybe a little like how it looked to travelers in 1832 (when it became a federal post road) or even in the Middle Ages when travelers were following a well worn trail along the glacial ridge here.
