For @rjrock.bsky.social's challenge this week I went for a crop and a tint that bordered on the surreal, hopefully without tipping into it.

Two colors. Shadows get one, highlights get the other. Same source image for everyone. You choose the pair and where they meet.

This is one of my favorite images--it's broad tonal range makes it perfect for this, but watch the noise.

#ECK #PostProcess Nov 2 - Nov 8 #Duotone Two colors. Shadows get one, highlights get the other. Same source image for everyone. You choose the pair and where they meet. HOW 1. Build the black and white first. Set contrast and tonal range before any color goes on. A weak monochrome makes a weak duotone. 2. Pick your pair. Shadow color first, then highlight color. 3. Map them. Use any tool that tints shadows and highlights separately. 4. Set the balance. Move where the two colors meet. That one move changes the mood. The pair: complementary, close neighbors, or a quiet off-black and off-white. The balance: which color owns the midtones. The contrast: deep and graphic, or soft and compressed. TOOLS (any will do) Photoshop: a Gradient Map adjustment layer. Put a Curves or Levels layer below the gradient map so it shapes the grayscale before the colors go on. Image > Mode > Duotone also works once the image is 8-bit grayscale. Lightroom: Color Grading. It does everything Split Toning did and more, with tint wheels for shadows, midtones and highlights. Tint the shadows and highlights, then use Balance. Anything else: any editor with shadow/highlight tinting or a gradient map. TIPS Color can expose banding and noise in smooth skies and water. Check at 100%. In Photoshop’s gradient map, the Dither box smooths the fill. Don’t push Clarity or Texture on smooth areas to compensate. It amplifies the noise. Your dark color doesn’t have to be near-black. Navy, plum and deep green all work.

For this week's #PostProcess #DuoTonechallenge, I changed to B&W, increased contrast, increased texture of the striped dunes, made curve adjustments in blue and green channels, applied negative vignette, and flipped image for just for fun. (Edits in Lightroom).

I liked how the people on the dune were more noticeable when I lightened the photo so that's the direction I went.

Canva - lightened and used an antique filter to bring out the beige. Color selected the dark areas to navy blue. Cropped to make the people more noticeable.

I used the iPhone photo editor’s Clean Up, Extend, and Crop tools. In Snapseed, I used Double Exposure to superimpose a photograph of an oil painting’s impasto texture onto the surface of the main structure.

Sorry for the late challenge - life got in the way.
Every image has surfaces--decide what to do with them or treat the whole image as a surface. As always, you make the call. Tips in the reply.

tinyurl.com/5ymmwstb
Every image has a surface. Decide what yours is, then work on it. The subject is not the brief. The skin is. Texture is one answer. It is not the only one. Start by looking Before you edit, find the surfaces in the image. Ask what each one is made of, how it catches light, and whether it’s rough or smooth, matte or reflective, new or worn. You can work one surface, several, or all of them. Three ways in (pick one, mix them, or ignore them) 1. Work the surface Make it something you can feel. Push grain, grit, relief, materiality. Build texture where the image already has it Try monochrome so texture carries the image instead of color Try film grain or a gritty print look 2. Smooth the surface Polish, soften, quiet it. What’s left when the roughness goes? Reduce clarity and local contrast, or blur selectively Calm busy areas and let a smooth one lead Aim for a flat, graphic, almost painted field 3. Go beneath it Take the surface away, or look through it. What’s underneath? Strip the color and let structure show Pull back the skin: peel, fade, or reveal Try layering or blending to suggest what lies below Or treat the image as an object Print, paper, emulsion, glass. Make it look like a surface in its own right.

Beautiful source photo by Rock (@rjrock.bsky.social) for this week's #PostProcess challenge.

After converting to grayscale, I adjusted the tonal range with a luminance S-curve and used a blue channel curve to create indigo shadows and warm ivory highlights.

#duotone
High-contrast duotone edit of sand dunes under a clear sky. The landscape is split into two distinct color channels: the deep, textured shadows of the sand and valleys are saturated in deep indigo-violet, while the bright sunlit crests of the dunes and the glowing horizon fade into a smooth, warm cream-yellow light.
