I’m supposed to be preparing to do the thing i don’t want to do that will enable me to do more things i don’t really wanna do, so it is a good time to tell you all that i am considering taking a cohort through the equivalent of a B.A. in Philosophy starting in the new year.…

…even if output is text not song. I do think it’s important to understand *what* LLMs are doing to generate their outputs, rather than only focusing on whether they are ‘conscious’ and whether you can have poetry without conscious creativity. But then I read lots of poststructuralism in my youth…

this is probably a bit arbitrary because who knows, but something that stuck with me when I was really into the figures of crit theory and poststructuralism and later french marxism and such was that many of them seemed to be fucking insufferable people

the classic structuralism vs poststructuralism example is "king". the idea is that, underlying everything, there's some sort of "king-ness", there's the word "king," and then there's the connection between the two. signifier/signified/sign. and we understand "king" not only in relation to king-ness,

And don't get me started on the other straw-man arguments regarding "Postmodernism" or "nihilism" or "poststructuralism" or "relativism." I do think that (as Eric Hayot, @ehayot.bsky.social) has pointed out, we have too often ceded the insistence that we produce truth to other parts of the

"Flying Fish and Poison" is a cross-biography of Professor Ishida and Stiegler. What Professor Ishida wrote is that poststructuralism and the problems of contemporary tech are connected, and that Stiegler was the one who thought the missing link between them.

previously some, yes, but there are lots of counter-arguments to be found in postcolonial studies, poststructuralism and contemporary psychology.

Yeah this was another thing for me, I got very into poststructuralism and such on the fear that basically my worldview about things like trans rights wouldn’t be born out by the data, and then it basically was and I felt like an idiot

Ya know?
I'm starting to think these evangelical Christian's and "prepers" may onto to something?
Why, you ask?

First poststructuralism, and then media and digital studies has been making the point for *decades* about the textualization (and literal codification) of the material world. My shelves groan.

I'm not going to repost that clip of Vance being a bigot and "defining" socialism, but do you remember when conservatives were hella pissed about poststructuralism in the 90s? When they were just so angry that meaning was relative and people could define shit "however they want"?

Sigh.

Michel and Mom | Leigh Claire La Berge
Mom’s still here. I can call her and talk to her, though not about French medical history. Not about anything, really — we mostly exchange affective states and appreciate the fact of each other’s being. Of the growing collection of losses I feel so acutely in the wake of Mom’s dementia, many are the obvious and expected. Her whole self. Her role as parent. Her daily phone calls to me. Other losses I am genuinely surprised by.

I hate when YouTubers treat postmodernism/poststructuralism/critical theory as a kind of mystic art where you don’t have to justify your claims or explain anything.

people who don't like poststructuralism seem to regard him as harmfully insane, but i don't understand that, it seems rather that he read a bunch of psychoanalysis and failed to understand that it's intended as a tool that is supposed to make people feel better, it's not a religious theory

Yes, it's very frustrating when, straight up, poststructuralism is VERY useful for understanding LLMs

On page 512 Dirlik describes "rephrasing of Marxism in the language of poststructuralism... ends up not with its dispersion into local vernaculars but with a return to a first world language", postcolonial critics claim they are rejecting the universal pretensions of Marxism. But then just translate

We again return to the conflict of universiality versus local understanding in Dirlik, with their example of Chinese Marxism (512). Their discussion of the limits of poststructuralism as a means of communication also bring back our same question from early on in class. Can poststructural thought-

Oh he definitely didn’t defend him. He despised de Man & saw his downfall (as a Nazi) as an opportunity to dismiss all of poststructuralism & literary theory, and then all of the humanities. What I wonder is if theres some repetition compulsion here, where Pinker’s race science will wreck HIS field
