#poverty/#homelessness

That this country has 100 billionaires and still has appalling levels of poverty, homelessness, and medical bankruptcy is just appalling.
This brief summary of yesterday’s letter is really good.

📝 Today’s Letter from an American reminds us: democracy isn’t lost in a grand coup. It’s bartered away in glittering rooms. If we don’t defend it—locally, nationally, globally—it will vanish like smoke through careless fingers.

We force people into poverty...
Then criminalize poverty...
Then put people in for-profit prisons...
That industry makes billions in profit...
Then spends millions on lobbying to further criminalize poverty...

Criminalizing homelessness isn’t about ending homelessness.

Homelessness is a choice, but it’s not one that’s made by those experiencing homelessness. It’s a choice made by those in power.

Homelessness is a policy decision.
Poverty is a policy choice.

The ruling class makes that choice, not us.

Poverty and homelessness in society is a political choice.
“In Finland, the # of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back to a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

But the current right-wing govt backtracked.

Maha is just another astroturfed front in the American Reactionary Movement. This movement is responsible for every public health crisis: climate, automobile deaths, gun violence, homelessness, poverty. Its the Don't Tell Me What To Do movement. They are few but they're mobilized for war.
The few things that maha "gets right" are such banal and commonplace ideas that no one disagrees upon and are not worth mentioning.

Ah yes, Eat better and exercise, an idea that doctors are famously hostile toward

Telling a generation of young people that there's no money for free healthcare, education, inclusive infrastructure, ending homelessness, poverty, etc, and then spending billions to sponsor wars and genocides abroad really does trigger a very particular type of rage.

Eliminating red dye in processed foods is not going to do much to improve the health of children.

Why? Food deserts. Poverty. Homelessness. Lack of healthcare. Widespread COVID
