But the thing about power is that it can be claimed. (See: 2026 US elections.) And one tool we can use as we work to claim power is our linguistic behavior. We should always hold space for the powerless, but wrt to those in power we should claim space.

Where you spend your money, which businesses you support, and how you organize with other consumers can all send a message. Economic power is another tool communities can use collectively.

I suspect that USAID was an effective tool for soft power and covert action *precisely because* it mostly did what it claimed to do and was helpful enough to be broadly liked.
So any replacement organization that proved to be any good at its job could also be used for soft power and covert action.

Don't get stuck in one perspective on Trump. Was he the master who forced elites to do things they didn't want? Was he a tool used by elites to do things they did want? Both things are true. Trumpism isn't just one person, and the election didn't end it. It gave us the power to end it, if we try.
