#prepress
I had some folks come up to me during the convention and mention my "toning" guide and how it has helped them over the years. It's not the most comprehensive, and prepress pals should look away, but it's for those interested in how I separate my tones into steps. chanchauart.com/blog/2022/6/...

7/ The Print Ready Export
"Act as a prepress technician. Prep my photo for print and feed. Analyze pixel size, needed aspect ratio, sharpening for final size, and color space per destination. Design each output's crop, resolution and format, sharpening per size, and a naming pattern."

Adding the missing 3mm of bleed by scaling the artwork up moves everything the customer placed. The prepress tool I built keeps the finished area at 1:1 and grows the bleed by extending the edge pixels outward, and it refuses the job when the source trim does not match the target.

I say non-commercial art because my main job is prepress/design for printing. Making flyers, business cards, posters and whatnot for businesses.

But I really can't do much illustration from scratch so I really want to practice and make my own things.

Deranged boosterism. Writers LOVED word processing even when it was all dedicated machines. Typewriter 1st draft, edit on early WPs during entry.

Prepress department is the operative analogy here: The early digital tools flat-out weren't anywhere near what they could do manually. That's AI.

Comp Day! White Ash hardcover I put together for Charlie Stickney. Soup to nuts on this one. Designed the slipcase, dust jacket, production, prepress, etc…

I started working with a Wacom in the early 90s when I was doing photo retouching at a variety of prepress shops (working on 200MB CMYK files on 32MB RAM machines: those were the days!) and I'm pretty sure it is what has saved me from the RSI problems everyone around me has had.

Then I make my gamut compression decisions at the end, and let a prepress tech make sure it looks good.

Simulating the print stuff & an extra colour channel per pixel does also slow things down/increase sizes, & things like blendmodes/filters are all written for RGB and undefined for CMYK(s)

I just realized I never wrote an introduction. So Hi everyone reading this. My name is Mirko and I am a graphic and editorial designer.

I love working on books. I am also good at developing concepts, like to experiment and do prepress.

Reminiscent of working in a PrePress shop when a #HamRadio club newsletter editor brought in the next issue. “Mac System 7 Is Out… and it’s NEAT!”

I think we were not yet using #QuarkXpress at that time.

It aint that one is better than the other, far from it. Verticals are a skill on their own. For me though, as a guy whose worked in traditional print in terms of illustration and prepress, I find more fun in print page to vertical, than vertical to print page

I had a boss at a digital design and prepress shop repeatedly tell me, "Well, what if I want all three?" 🙄

💯 nothing like prepress handoff in two weeks to clear a thicket

Looking at this photo as someone who spent twelve years in a newspaper prepress office, that entire photo would be on the cyan plate. "No Chin" already looks like a Batman villain by default. That suit ain't helping.

Every D&D manual was leaked in PDF, never scanned but actual prepress files sometimes with crop marks

There’s a thing I’ve noticed working in prepress too lately. In 2010 a 14 day lead time was minimum.

Then same week. Then overnight.

Now (adding with gen AI in the mix) having a print idea in the AM and wanting the final delivered before midday isn’t uncommon.

oh this rules a ton. love all the little doodles and exploded diagrams n such... good as hell!!

(💭 prepress brain kicking in but 16 pages is such a perfect sweet spot for actually gettin this physically printed & saddlestitched, too... this'd make such a fun print imo)

god I wish that were me, I still need it for work, InDesign mostly and prepress stuff with Acrobat but otherwise I’ve moved to affinity for most of my needs
