They're not. Taxonomy is a nightmare.While they are in the Superfamily Musteloidea, they are in the Family Procyonidae. Furry noodles are the Family Mustelidae. So while raccoons are Musteloids, they are not Mustelids. They are Procyonids.

So the North American raccoon is a plump, gregarious trash panda with mischief in their hearts.
Their cousins to the south are slender, secretive & generally avoid humans, keeping to themselves & their work of hunting small animals.
But they're all glorious, wonderful procyonids. 🦝
