🦖 Daily Paleo 🦖; Propleopus spp.

From Late Pleistocene Australia, "before greater foot" is a genus of kangaroo up to 47kg in weight. Unlike other kangaroos and similar to their modern relative the musky rat-kangaroo, they were omnivorous and quadrupedal

Probably Propleopus! A liberal application of "kangaroo" indeed, as its closest living relative is the musky rat kangaroo, the least kangaroo-like of all extant macropods.

Results from the paleostream from 13th December 2025.

Grant, an Eocene ant-mimicking alienopterid insect.
Sapeornis, a Cretaceous fruit-eating bird from China (wings corrected later).
Xenosmilus, a Pleistocene saber-toothed cat from North America.
Propleopus, a Pleistocene marsupial from Australia.

In the Late Pleistocene, northwest of what is now Melbourne, a pair of Propleopus sit below a River Redgum tree after a day of foraging. One of them has caught a Bush Rat, and they will eat it together. Above them is a pair of Yellow Rosellas, waiting for the Propleopus to move so they can forage.

Would also say that I’m REALLY glad we got to see Propleopus in not just a more updated anatomical form, but as a beautifully rendered CGI animal!

An image of Procoptodon was accidentally released with a caption intended for Propleopus, a large, omnivorous rat kangaroo. This was noted and corrected on the same day, but by then it was too late and the wrong caption was already being shared.

yeah if it were me trying to come up with a common name, I'd have used something like "giant rat kangaroo", even if I'd still at least name Propleopus

since this is one of my fave Australian megafauna, it was kind of a downer to see it be called just a "kangaroo", lol

Here I've reconstructed the skull of Ekaltadeta. Reconstructions often miss that the entire front part of the skull is missing in the above specimen, as is a substantial portion of the front of the mandible.

Also, their feet! Unlike most moder roos, they probably had 5 fully functional toes.
