Kangaroos are intimidating enough; imagine if there were one taller than the tallest basketball player & weighing the same as a gorilla.

Meet the extinct Procoptodon goliah, the largest of the short-faced kangaroos. They could tower over humans at 8 ft 10 in (270 cm) and up to 530 lbs (240 kg).

For more reading, the Australia Museum hosts this page, and they have a life-like full-sized replica in the museum that you can visit.

Let's be honest, if the emus could have allied with short-faced kangaroos, Australia would still belong to the animals.

Top 3 PhP Ice Age things I’m curious about:

1) Homotherium-mammoth hunt (obviously)
2) Thylacoleo vs adult Procoptodon
3) Thylacoleo and Procoptodon top speed

While Procoptodon is a well known taxon there where many other large sthenurines and giant kangaroos from other families. As you can see in this size chart by @gnath.bsky.social this results in something that might remind one of the gazelle and antelope diversity of Africa.

🦖 Daily Paleo 🦖; Procoptodon spp.

From Pleistocene Australia, "forwards cutting tooth" is a genus that includes the largest kangaroos to ever exist at 2 meters in height. Unable to hop, its broad hips and ankle joints point to its weight being supported by one leg at a time

They lived alongside modern kangaroos, but differed in significant ways:

1. They likely couldn't hop (their weight would have damaged tendons), but had much larger butts & ankles, suggesting they walked bipedally with muscular tail support.

Why is Australia's extinct kangaroo, Procoptodon goliah, called the T-rex of roos? What fossil evidence caused palaeontologists to give it that nickname?

Finished today with a nice little job: rebuilding an ulna of the largest-ever kangaroo, Procoptodon goliah. Shame about the missing bit in the middle!

Giant ancestors of modern-day kangaroos — which previous research has estimated could weigh up to 250 kilograms — may have been able to hop in short bursts, according to research in Scientific Reports. go.nature.com/49OWsJX #evosky 🧪

One of those was Procoptodon, a very large short faced Kangaroo.

A recent trackway found in South Australia attributed to Procoptodon showed it didn't hop but walked bipedally

My digimon I created some years ago. Felt like drawing some characters I haven't in ages and Namakemon fit that criteria. He's kinda a terrier, procoptodon and megatherium mixed up.

While it was previously believed that giant Pleistocene kangaroos could only walk, recent analysis of fossilized heel bones suggest that they may have been capable of hopping in short bursts to escape predators! 🧪

Ok we all wanna bring back mammoths with cloning, but there are some weirdos I think we should also consider. PROCOPTODON: giant pug-faced kangaroo with forward-facing eyes. We think it walked instead of hopping. Early Australians met it & I want to feel what they felt
