Procoptodon

Happy #FossilFriday! Check out these cast lower and upper jaws of Procoptodon, the giant, short-faced kangaroo of #Australia, at the Science Museum of Minnesota! One species (P. goliah) could get over 8 feet tall! These herbivores went extinct about 45,000 yrs ago, possibly due to human hunting.

Most of the mammals likely weren't a threat,.I'm thinking the really scary monsters were the megalania & crocodile.

The genyornis & procoptodon were herbivorous, but could still have been aggressively defensive.

There were also thylacine. (Tasmanian tigers) They were only leopard-sized.

When humans first arrived in Australia, there were megafauna like diprotodon optatum, a rhino-sized wombat, procoptodon goliah, a short-faced kangaroo as tall as a human, genyornis newtoni, a flightless bird 6 times the size of an emu and megalania, a 1,400lb 15-ft long monitor lizard.

That looks a bit like the kangaroo dinosaur a Procoptodon 😂🤣🤗😘

In 1874, he would name a newly found kangaroo relative Protemnodon anak.

Protemnodon is thought to be physically similar to the far smaller Wallaby. But the largest ones grew almost to the size of Procoptodon, the giant short fact kangaroo.

procoptodon goliah - the giant kangaroos humans hunted to extinction in Australia

While Procoptodon is a well known taxon there where many other large sthenurines and giant kangaroos from other families. As you can see in this size chart by @gnath.bsky.social this results in something that might remind one of the gazelle and antelope diversity of Africa.

🦘🦴 For years, scientists thought any #kangaroo weighing over 160 kg would be too heavy to hop without snapping its tendons. But new research on 40,000-year-old fossils shows that #IceAge giants like Procoptodon goliah were built like heavyweight athletes.

Ancient Kangaroos Were Absolutely Humongous, But They Could Still Hop
Kangaroos and jumping go hand in hand. But that wasn’t always the case. During the Pleistocene era, which spanned roughly 2.6 million years ago to only about 11,700 years ago, kangaroos were gigantic. In fact, they were such beefy beasts that archaeologists assumed they wouldn’t be able to jump. Some species, like Procoptodon goliah, stood […]

Funnily enough, there actually WAS a group of prehistoric kangaroos that walked instead of hopping, with the most well-known being the giant short-faced Procoptodon, but they've been extinct for thousands of years.

While it was previously believed that giant Pleistocene kangaroos could only walk, recent analysis of fossilized heel bones suggest that they may have been capable of hopping in short bursts to escape predators! 🧪

But given that Procoptodon goliah, the biggest kangaroo species known, standing at about 2 metres tall, died out about 40,000 years ago, we don't know if they actually did hop - just that they probably could.

🐨 Did you know that Procoptodon was a giant, flightless bird that lived in Australia during the Pleistocene era? 🌳 It's one of the most fascinating extinct birds in Australian history! 💥
