I am having a hard time swallowing this new chorus of “I can’t believe they got this far” - girl, what? They spent the first term testing/destroying as many guardrails as they could, then they didn’t get in trouble for it, nothing got reinforced or fixed, a lot of the protofascism was maintained…

This is where fratriarchy and protofascism are useful concepts, because you can reject American exceptionalism and unpack the roots of the current fascism without erasing the qualitative difference when fratriarchy metastasises and protofascism crystallises into outright fascism.
People going "America was always fascist" or "it's been like this since the 1980s" or making related claims don't seem to realize it, but they're telling everyone that nothing different is happening, nothing worse than usual, so if you weren't up in arms about eg 2013, you shouldn't be now either.

This is only true when you have a functioning democracy. Once a democracy secedes to protofascism and voting power is manipulated & undermined, other, more direct forms of action are required. Mass strikes and protests might work, but once fascism becomes entrenched, violent resistance is required.
