#protofascism
the "observation" depends on two things, the church has lost relevance (it has gained relevance) and that specifically made them change to being more openly reactionary (it was always protofascism and has gotten "more tolerant" over time)

it is just wrong.

Dear Philip I'm sure PR is known to you. @proufos.bsky.social essay below says a bit more pavlosroufos.substack.com/p/a-weimar-m...
and there are other essays in his substack that to my mind are equally important and revelatory.
A Weimar massacre.
Hannah Arendt, Wilhelm Röpke and Marburg's protofascism.

I'd say Herbert was aiming into an ideological space that ended up being neoliberalism/right-libertarianism and then ends up with the same protofascism problem as all the other right-libertarians.

The media have helped to give us Trump and protofascism. They need to assist in restoring democracy (or they will go down with the rest of us)

I can’t guarantee we’ll get better. So I encourage you to find better partners

Liberals in America have been engaged in off-and-on conflict with fascism and protofascism from the beginning. We won’t stop fighting them, but we also can’t seem to fully rid ourselves of “Mr Hyde” either

when we look at “who has the right to a biology” we are engaging in what I believe to another aspect of protofascism that has not been named, which is the idea that biological birth lineage is the fundamental truth by which all societies are expected to primarily exist upon

Bush ushered in an era of protofascism which enabled Trump to do all the damage he's done.

Bush and Obama removed many of the traditionally held sentinels of presidential accountability.

I wonder how different things would be if Gore was elected instead.

Apparently, “antisemitism” is when someone NOT Jewish has a critical opinion (held by many JEWS) about Israel.

This is the exceptionalism which imho hurts the Jewish Cause (for safety), and ultimately always leads to protofascism. It’s the narcissist concept of the eternal victim.

a weirdly persistent, christian idea is that there is some unbroken chain of socialist thought

for some, there's a direct lineage from Marx to the present day, ignoring the middle steps which are all nationalist nonsense recycling the Social Democracy's protofascism.

Two things that are true at once: Peak Woke was indeed much socially and culturally worse than we like to pretend and has done a shit ton of damage to primary education especially, but also like... we live in Now Times, bitch! Woke lost! Personalism and protofascism is the enemy now! Dumbass!
“I lived through the years of peak woke, and it was a McCarthyite experience. I lived with the blue-state governance that doctrinaire progressivism encouraged, and it yielded civic and educational collapse”

That’s what’s happening now. I’m so confused.

Spider-Man spoiler:

The new Spider-Man was cute when it was doing character work, and Tom is my fave spidey but man, it sure is taking us back to the superhero roots in protofascism.

Like I'm sorry but what do you mean Spider-Man has installed unwarranted mass surveillance on all of NYC

I grant that these far left operators are ridiculous and could benefit from reading some history, but pound-for-pound, the mainline republicans who enable protofascism are orders of magnitude more dangerous. Stop complaining about mud puddles when we have oceans of anti-americanism to oppose.

With the rise of mainstream partisan news after the dismantling of the Fairness Doctrine, it deepened political divides through a rabid corporate need for viewers and a zealous desire to evangelize right-wing and corporate institutions. A melding of capitalism and protofascism, straight to the brain

I've been doing that for about a week now. You are correct. It's been long enough for the magic to be back. I also think distance from the GWOT has also allowed me to see the franchise's boneheaded protofascism more as an artifact of bad writing than a philosophical statement.

"Protofascism is defined as a movement that borrows fascism’s characteristic moves,” writes Marcia Langton. “It depends on scapegoating ethnic and religious minorities, organising around a leader whose personal authority overrides party democracy." trib.al/eHHuKs6
Can Pauline Hanson be stopped?
Pauline Hanson’s populist and mostly false declarations have changed little in 30 years. They are her personal grievances writ large for an audience hungry to attribute their own grievances to particular races and religions.

Ego? Hubris? A conviction that he as a member of the elite knows better than the baying mob with their "no platform" tosh? A sense that even if Rufo's ideas are beyond the pale, the sheer emotive *power* of them is something one *must* pay attention to? Consider?

Yeah, that's protofascism, dude.

Most of Corporate America has certainly capitulated. Much of which is controlled by oligarchs loyal to Trump. But most of those in power, w/some exceptions, are doing what they can with the limited power they have.

Our #1 power is participation. Voting. That’s how we’ll end protofascism in the US
