#AMomentinNature was this turtle (probably a Florida cooter(Pseudemys floridana)) laying eggs in the front meadow area not too far from our pond. No crows were watching this time, so maybe we'll have new turtles for the pond.

I've been told this pond in San Antonio has a particular introduced turtles species I wanted to find. Went to check it out and found an introduced species, just not the one I was looking for. This one is a River Cooter, Pseudemys concinna. While native to Texas, they are not native to THIS part.🐢

The first sunbather of the season is, I hope, a harbinger of spring.
This is a photo along the edge of a small pond. A turtle, possibly a river cooter (Pseudemys concinna), is sunning itself on an old piece of wood. The turtle head is dark green-black. The front part of its shell is clean and brown. The back half of its shell is brown too but that is from the mud on it. The shell is about 9" (23 cm) across and at leas that long as well. It's tail is 2" (5 cm) long and is pinkish at the tip.

A southern River Cooter turtle - high domed shell, yellow stripes on it's face and neck running down to the yellowish bottom shell. This is a young-ish one, that also has some red coloration around the shell edges. The turtle is sitting upon floating green vegetation in a dark water Louisiana bayou. Sitting on top of the turtle, is a green frog, facing away from the camera - Southern Leopard Frog. This was in "our backyard" for a night we camped on a bayou for a night, on our way home from the Solar Eclipse in Texas - April 2024. Lots of turtles. Lots of frogs. Quite a few alligators. I was shooting with long zoom into a bright reflection - just hoping to get the turtle in focus so I could identify it, and add it to my Herpmapper observations. I didn't even see the frog until I reviewed the SD card hours later.

What a fucking idiot. That's a river cooter (Pseudemys concinna). They are very very common throughout the southern states and can be found at most pet stores and are even given as prizes at carnivals. It's like trying to smuggle a common cockroach.
