#pseudomelanistic
One unusual leopard for #InternationalLeopardDay - a pseudomelanistic one. Pseudomelanism, also called abundism, is a condition which causes an increased number of markings in an animal's coat, making them appear overall darker. Only one pseudomelanistic leopard has ever been photographed.

Tiger for #internationaltigerday!

This one is pseudomelanistic, meaning they have a condition which causes an increased number of dark markings/stripes/spots in the animal's coat. Pseudomelanistic tigers are only found in Simlipal Tiger Reserve, making these felines very, very rare.

#ArAdventCalendar day 7, and a seldom seen color variant rather than a species: meet the pseudomelanistic or "king" leopard. Also called abundism, this rare mutation increases the number of (dark) markings, creating unique fur patterns.

One more #CardForConservation done! Of course I couldn't draw a normal tiger, so have a pseudomelanistic one.

As usual, proceeds will go to wildlife conservation, and you can buy the card over on Ko-Fi: ko-fi.com/beckykidus64...

Time for a repost, now that Bluesky finally supports images of this size.

The stripes make the tiger, but how do you make the stripes?

Ever heard of a blue bobcat? Most people know about black leopards or white tigers, but few know just how many different feline color morphs exist. Therefore, behold the full list - or at least what I believe to be the full list as of today 🐾

When someone tells me to think horses, not zebras, I not only keep thinking zebras, but pseudomelanistic zebras. Try and stop me.
This amazing picture was taken at Kruger National Park, South Africa in May 2026.
Pseudomelanism is a type of mutation causing the black pigment to expand and merge during embryonic development of one in a millionish zebras.

Come check out session S01 #SMBE2026 (on vulnerable populations in a rapidly changing world - Vandsalen), where I'll be talking about a framework for genomic rescue and it's use for a preemptive rescue of the famous pseudomelanistic tigers in Simlipal.
Today - 14:55

If you want to chat about genomic rescue and how we have applied our framework to co-design an intervention together with practitioners for the mysterious black (pseudomelanistic) tigers of Simlipal, come find me! 🐯🧬

We devised new colour patterns and colour-schemes in-house, so everything is a massive collaboration involving our researchers, concept artists and the CG team, nothing can be pinned down on one person! But pseudomelanistic tigers as inspiration was my idea lol :)

a pseudomelanistic smilodon would also look really cool!

Both is such an amazing combo hehe

I didn't know 'pseudomelanistic' was a thing, let alone in Planet Zoo with all my hours, but LOOK AT MY BIG STRIPEY BOI! He's a Bengal tiger born in my sandbox zoo

Day 71/100 of Cool Indian Wildlife History

Similipal's pseudomelanistic tigers are famous for their larger than usual black stripes today. But what's not generally known is this old record of a completely black tiger shot in Chittagong in 1846. It is the only known record of its kind.

And more art of Pokemon with various pigmentation conditions/mutations. Ignoring the fact that if a critter is bright blue or purple it wouldn't be melanin giving them their colours for the sake of having fun :D #pokemon #pokepigments

because from there you have an infinite tiger factory, each producing an offspring in their lifetime for each of the other enclosures; ensuring there's no inbreeding at all. now if you want real money, try upgrading to leucistic, pseudomelanistic or golden tigers because theyre really super rare and
