The Bravest of the Beagles 🐶/ Xenofiction WIP
Writers: Do you have issues keeping your dialogue tags appropriate for your character? For me, it's making sure all of them are "dogish" in some way.
At least I get to use "growled" unironically lol.

The beagle could almost feel them beyond the grass as his breath wheezed between his ribs, their furious jaws snapping, yellowed claws scrabbling, fur coats thinning and stretching in great holes against the bitter dusty wind. Impinged with the wild, touched and held by no man, given to the law of pure primal instinct, these were dogs no bigger than beagles, but sharper than beagles, more blessed and quick than beagles, more frightening and determined than beagles. Bad felt grateful for the flooding smell of full blood covering his nose, washing out the memory of dirty water, of chemicals, of sanitization and wet concrete. He could forget it and never let it be known again. Scrubbed away by dirt and blood, he could be free to never be clean, not so viscerally and never past the fur to the skin, the sensation of those sponges that rubbed right down to the bone. A layer of dirt could forever be his friend.

The Bravest of the Beagles 🐶 / Xenofiction WIP
Gotta remember dogs have sensitive noses; flowers make a big impact. Especially if you have bushes of them in your scene.
Writers: Anyone working on xenofiction projects right now? Am I alone?

Bad walked behind her, noticing for the first time that her tail was in the air. They passed by the thickest of the golden grass, until a plodded out path spread out beneath their paws. Magroll walked slowly and Bad kept a casual pace behind her; it was fine to do this here. They weren't…running away from anything. More often than not, they had been carried from place to place, touching nose to ear and smelling each other desperately for reassurance when they got to wherever it was they were going. They had always been fuzzy little bundles in gloved hands, never the walkers, never the determiners of direction. Bad kept his nose nearly to Magroll's tail the entire time so that he wouldn't lose her, trying to concentrate on where he was going and how to not trip over his own ears. I never knew ground could be so soft. Lilacs began to dot the grass, great strong bushes pushing through the golden. Bad's nose wrinkled at the overpowering scent that bent in sweetly all around him. Magroll didn't mind, trotting along happily with her white head held high. Maybe her senses really are dull here, just as well as in the cage fields. They soon reached a clearing, all padded down and free of weeds, it was skirted with long strands of yellow grass that bowed away from it, turned so thickly and evenly away that the entire little grove seemed like a secluded nest, one made of brilliant smell and color. Magroll stopped in the very center of it all: a circle of soft earth utterly surrounded by lilac bushes. The dense cluster of flower acted as a great border, enclosing the beagles within a quiet place where not even the happy shouting barks of the lemon beagles could reach them. Bad watched in awe, suddenly noticing that Magroll looked very bright underneath the sun. Not dull, not old, not even close to frail as she was before. The light brown in her coat carried warmness, and her features squinted against the sun as she sniffed deeply in the fragrant air. Book 65: Pax by Sara Pennypacker. Pax #1. Not quite what I expected, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The human POV kind of overshadows the fox POV, but it's nice to read a modern xenofiction with a more naturalist style.

(Also, the author's name is amazing)

40K's Imperium would hate my major space civilizations for both being xenofiction and thus not the sacred human form (LOL LMAO) but also because unlike a lot of scenarios the rogue AI scenario just...isn't there.

The bulk of the Empire's presence is AI drones harvesting the 99% of space that's uninhabitable, which is also where the bulk of its actual wealth is in a high-Kardashev scenario but 'empire is a big drone strip-mining stars and planets' is not a very interesting scenario for the hoi polloi.

Did anyone know a community of writers I can join? I'm trying to build up my confidence in my own work. I love my friends and pack, but they're not exactly critics hah.

I'd prefer a group of therian/furry leaning writers, if possible – I tend to write xenofiction.

A black-and-white digital illustration of a striped dragon sitting down in a cavern. A lantern on the wall behind him faintly illuminates the room, and the shoulder of a hippogryph stands on the left edge of the art. A black-and-white digital illustration of a spotted dragon and gryphon-like creature looking up at the sky behind them. Past a mountain cliff and coniferous trees, smoke rises from the horizon. The same spotted dragon and gryphon creature sitting side-by-side in a cave and looking at each other, surrounded by a sketchy, black border of stone silhouettes.

I still prefer my scalies and avians without breasts, but that's because I'm ace, tired of allosexual breast focus, and get deep enough into xenofiction that I like figuring out species-specific definitions of "attractive". But, yeah, most of those purists weren't arguing it in good faith.
