#pseudosuchians
I could be wrong on this, but pseudosuchians were ancestrally laying soft shelled eggs, so they could evolve viviparity until hard shells became the norm. To my knowledge, we don't yet know when that happened. Could be after the thalattosuchian split?

One of the coolest from the project so far. Speaking about size constraints: aren't we potentially overestimating the egg issue? Aquatic pseudosuchians/pinnipeds/turtles have/had taxa reaching several tons despite land-bound reproductive strategies. I suspect locomotion might be a bigger factor.

Yeah it is the Tyrannosaurus of land pseudosuchians. Another good pick. Though personally I would go with Fasolasuchus or Prestosuchus. Or Postosuchus if we need a bipedal land croc.

Also outside of the usual Triassic and Cenozoic suspects, Razanandrongobe unfortunately has a name not too kind on the general audience, but it's criminally underrated: one of the largest known terrestrial pseudosuchians and it's pachydont like a T. rex

Triassic pseudosuchians might be a great idea.

It classifies pseudosuchians by their snout shape (and sometimes their dentition) to determine feeding ecology. Seems reasonable. It's got two categories here that I wanted to address here: generalist and (to a greater extent) "macro-generalist".

Take note Tim Haines: Los Colorados DID have a lot of pseudosuchians.

Day 08- Dynamosuchus
This paleoart depicts two Dynamosuchus for an event called Septembersuchus, which showcases the diversity of Brazilian pseudosuchians in all its splendor. #setembrosuchusBR #septembersuchusBR

Curious, too, because many dinosaurs, pseudosuchians, and plesiosaurs (not plotted on the charts on this paper) seem to score higher on these same metrics in the papers using the same methods.

Have you seen The End of Oak Street? The Jurassic franchise would never…

Anyone identify what the group of Pseudosuchians were supposed to be?

So we have Olkasuchus, Fasolasuchus, Riojasuchus, and Coloradisuchus left as Los Colorados pseudosuchians go

If this holds up, a whole bunch of Triassic Pseudosuchians suddenly make a hell of a lot more sense.

If it turns out to be the case, then perhaps it can indeed be the first evidence of pseudosuchians already showing social behaviours as far back as the Triassic

For what its worth, dinosaurs (especially at larger sizes) did WORSE than pseudosuchians at lower latitudes (the Pangean interior) during the Late Triassic, which would indicate they were LESS suited for water conservation or surviving droughts at that point.

and without the large Pseudosuchians like Fasolasuchus to fear and compete with, the Dinosaurs would go from strength to strength and rule the earth for 160 million years.

but in the long run, such success could not last. around 200 million years ago, the supercontinent pangaea started to break apart, and this resulted in the extinction of 70 to 80 percent of all living things at the time, many of the Pseudosuchians were among them. but their clade would survive in-

that it wasn't a particularly fast hunter, but it didn't need to be, it could use ambush tactics and only needed to be faster than its preferred prey, the sauropodomorphs in its environment. Fasolasuchus was one of the last and the largest in the family of Pseudosuchians called the Rauisuchians.-

Isolated Desmatosuchus scutes were also once found in a rich concentration of Postosuchus skeletons, which may suggest predation/consumption by the predatory pseudosuchians.

... & plants on land. They're apex predators and swift runners & you could be forgiven for thinking some are dinosaurs. Then the End Triassic Extinction Event pops off 201.4 Mya & now the only Pseudosuchians left are the Crocodylomorphs, & only the land dwelling generalists...3/7

I kinda wish I liked the gameplay of those games a little more. The animals (when not from the movies) are often pretty great. I generally enjoyed 1 and 2 but ran out of steam at some point because the gameplay loop is repetitive and doesn’t vary much.

These pseudosuchians though. 👀

I think this opens the door for future crocodilians and pseudosuchians. There's a wealth of choices
August 4, 2026 at 3:36 PM
they would still be tempting prey for many of the creatures living alongside them. but even creatures like Powellvenator had problems of their own. fellow predators like Riojasuchus would have been competition. equal in size to Powellvenator, it was a member of the clade called Pseudosuchians.-

Yes, and I am saying the claim "these reptiles have had their day" is wrong because they (especially "pseudosuchians) were just as or more successful than dinosaurs at this point. Also, dicynodonts were not reptiles.
