Given the state of HE, the education-to-pubarch pipeline is resoundingly heading towards ‘people like us’. Respect towards the discipline of pubarch from other areas of archaeology is also a binfire. Useful to have us for impact but it’s not actual scholarship if it’s ‘public’. And round it goes

Longtime bsky lurker battling social media fatigue but here's a reintroduction! 👋🏼 I do all things archaeology education and research public programming impact & effectiveness to help archaeologists improve their outreach skillz. Evaluation & strategy are my jam. And I just published my first book!

Our crack team are hard at work opening up test pits today as part of the Dig The Castle project! We are digging in the back gardens of some very kind members of the local community, so they can see archaeology in action close up.

Happy to be a part of this interview along with one of my #pubarch besties @semiller88.bsky.social!
People ask this question a LOT, so I talked to some amazing folks and wrote a short explainer.

tl;dr - Leave it, take a pic, tell the SHPO. 🏺🧪
What should I do if I find a cool artifact in the US?
Spotting artifacts in the U.S. is common, but archaeologists want you to leave them in place.

I was at the other place since almost the beginning and I have been mourning a loss of community for a while. Wonderful humans have convinced me to hop on over to the blue side. Looking for other #archaeology folks but also #womeninscience #pubarch #scicoms & #geospatial folks to follow. Hit me up!

Some things about #pubarch still get me a little, maybe in part because I don't experience it as much now since I am less used to discussing archaeology day to day.

#Archaeology / #pubarch community: does your org have handout/conference swag photo scales?

I could use *lots* to hand out to the lovely neighbors who send along documentation of the chemical weapons used in our community. I have a few but they're easy to lose track of & lots of diffuse helpers.

Archaeologists, many of us are at or beyond capacity with FIRST LEGO requests. The kids will soon move from general Q&A to needing specific feedback on their team projects, and they'll want some one on one time for that. If you can do ONE zoom, it makes a huge difference! #pubarch 🏺
In which I beg archaeologists to sign up for the fall semester of Skype a Scientist, because we're getting buried in requests for your area of expertise.

I run @skypeascientist.bsky.social which matches scientists w/classrooms, libraries, etc for Q&As.

We match First Lego League teams too. This tends to wipe out one category of scientist bc so many teams sign up for the same category (this year, archaeologists). We're almost out of archaeologists.

These past several months of robotics mania have been an absolute blur, but also uplifting and rewarding! These kids wowed us with their innovations and ideas. Congrats to all the teams who participated and learned something new about archaeology! #pubarch🏺

As a pubarch program director at a commercially funded dept in a Uni, I feel this big time. There's an expectation to do free public outreach & interp but the funding model makes it impossible. If/when we do things for free, it devalues our for-cost services. Grants are scarce. Burn out is real
