First, it told me I’m offline, which I found strange, when I switched browsers I got greeted with this page, screenshot of which is above. I switched to DNS4EU because I had issues with the Proton VPN default DNS, as it seemed like the easiest pick as I wanted a DNS from Europe. I switched to Quad9, and the website is accessible properly now. Should I be concerned? Is this a malicious website as they say, does anyone know why they’re blocked? I’m not using it for anything important.

I’m not sure the mechanics, other than this happened to me for months. Streaming services would ping for my VPN all the time, and the device and my VPN were using different DNS. “Looks like you’re using a VPN” was driving me crazy. Complained to VPN, did some troubleshooting, and turned out the device using its own DNS would trigger it. Hasn’t been a problem sense.

I referenced Quad9 DNS as probably one of the best private DNS you can use, Swiss based, no log, no tracking, no data to sell, etc. They also implement DNSSEC, DoH, DoT, QUIC, ECS (which you may or may bot want), malware blocking, content filtering, and maybe something else I’m forgetting. Many DNS sinkhole apps, OSes, or systems can actually utilize Quad9 for your resolver while those systems also block ads. Below is my functional list of systems that I’m aware of, though I haven’t tested everything. I believe all are considered FOSS, too. **If you don’t have a spare Raspberry Pi laying around, try running in HomeAssistant, Yunohost, ZimaOS (previously CasaOS), or others.** DNS sinkhole (Adblocking) apps: 1. Pihole 2. eBlocker 3. Technitium 4. AdGuard 5. uBlock Origin Feel free to comment and add your own I’m maybe not aware of. I’m no software engineer, but I can read through some code, though not an expert, nor have combed through these personally. Usually I’ve tested/run at the recommendation of others over the years before my ban on Reddit (for shitting on AI). Hope this helps!!

>ISP provided That’s reason #1 right there. Something to know is that if your VPN sets your DNS, and a device like your router also picks a DNS, if there’s a mis-match, it can make it very obvious you’re on a VPN to services that dislike VPNs.

I use Mullvad VPN anyway so my understanding is that everything is encrypted via that tunnel, but for others connecting to my network, I suppose it could boost their privacy a bit? Not to mention security from malware blocking. Is there any reason to keep it as is any not switch to Quad9? Would using Quad9 ontop of Mullvad make me more fingerprintable or anything, since I am sticking out more?
