Battlefront 3 talk is back: Lucasfilm reportedly weighing DICE or Bungie to build it. The whole thing traces to one anonymous column, EGM's Quartermann, read aloud by Jeff Grubb. Lucasfilm, EA and Bungie have said nothing. Even Grubb bets on DICE over Bungie. 🎮

Quartermann tipping us off to the latest Dec 1989 news with Tengen losing the battle for Tetris rights after Nintendo struck a deal with ELORG in Russia.

And getting us hype for Batman and Ninja Gaiden 2. Lynx flexing its arcade muscle with Gauntlet 3 and Rampage.

This is a very early PC-98 looking screenshot from Spring 1995 of "大地の子供達 ~マーセルヴァの杖~" (Children of the Land: Marselva's Staff) which would become "HOSHIGAMI~沈みゆく蒼き大地~" (Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth) and finally got released in 1997 (Max Five/Atlus)

You might zoom by it if you don't know what it is but this little section at the end of the "upcoming games" previews in Famitsu is actually like Quartermann rumors section of the mag. Confirmation here that Septentrion AKA SOS for SNES was made by Human's game school students (wow...just wow...)

The story then gets picked up by a bunch of American game magazines in May 1990, after the release of DQ4 in Japan (the first game in the series to be released on a Sunday). The talk this time is just about long lines and some mugging incidents. (Which did in fact happen.)

The earliest reference to Japan's DQ Craze in American gaming magazines (that I could find) comes in the second issue of EGM (July/August 1989), which claims that "over 300 kids were arrested for truency[sic] waiting for the latest chapter to be released at stores instead of being at school!"

I’ve been getting into old gaming magazines lately and I just love finding little things like this that remind you of how far gaming has come. Remember the Night Trap legal controversy?

I have no idea what this Quartermann quote from the EGM Compendium is supposed to mean, but I love it anyway

Also, this Quartermann rumor from **April 1990** has to win some sort of award for gaming industry foresight

Ahaha... I had forgotten about Quartermann. I don't think that column would fly anywhere today, much less in a popular magazine.

In retrospect, Quartermann sucked.

EGM #22, May '91 - What's the Quartermann thinking is going to happen now? Based on this the only thing I can tell is that 'Phantasy Star IV' bet is a bit off - it didn't come out until 2 years later.

Ayyyy, it is I, the GamerSnitch. If you go through the family history, you’ll find that I’m directly related to the old EGM alumni Quartermann. I’m his cousin’s niece’s grandmother’s half-brother’s...

Quartermann always had that “just seconds under the deadline, fill the whitespace with whatever nonsense comes from the fingertips” vibe

I was very amused to learn that the Quartermann rumors column in EGM back in the 90s was equal parts inside gossip, stuff they wanted to be true and hoped to manifest into existence, and wild bullshit.

To be clear, I read this as "DSP" having some totally non-gaming, potentially weird/scandalous slang meaning or something, the way "Quartermann" would write in this era.

If it was just referring to the SVP (actual name) being a DSP chip, which it was, I don't think we'd have gotten this comment.
So, in one of Quartermann's rumors sections, talking about Sega's new Genesis DSP chip, he says this:

"Called the 'DSP' (yeah, I know what it stands for, but it's their name, not mine)"

...any clue what he'd referring to "DSP" standing for in the early '90s?

The block of EGM issues I'm currently working through sees Quartermann being super salty over other video game magazines and editors.

Here's a fun comment he threw GameFan's way:

Hey Quartermann, please don't fat shame Sonic.

lol people like Quartermann and Sushi-X would be absolutely roasted about their "scoops" in modern day
