sometimes i think about the queernorm settings vs non-queernorm settings "debate" (personally: i get nothing out of queernorm settings but do what you will. just actually think through the worldbuilding and don't condescend to people who don't like queernorm) and i think there's a third camp too:

people can read what they want to read, but the idea that M/M is a misogyny-free wonderland and F/F cannot be is simply not aligned with reality - many lesbian and sapphic writers do queernorm fantasy or happy contemporaries, just like the rest of romance does

I don't consciously set out to write queernorm worlds, but I'll admit most main characters tend to be queer and don't really face any institutional bigotry, so... maybe that is queernorm by some standards?

I get it. Times are hard, and we want comfort, but for me comfort is having the characters fighting the same battles and winning. And queernorm only ever norms certain queers, not me (and I don't want to be the norm anyway)

Lots of really interesting discussions in the comments happening, though I will say that from an aroace perspective, a lot of what others consider/call "queernorm" has been distinctly non-normative wrt my own queerness, so much that I've called them "alloqueernorm"
All right. Calling all widely-read queer fantasy fans. Here's my argument: There are three kinds of worlds for queer folk in fantasy: queernormative, compulsorily heterosexual, and in-between, where queer-norm societies butt up against comp-het ones.
