🧬🦋 New preprint out! 🦋🧬
What mechanisms underlie large-scale chromosomal rearrangements? Why do rearrangement rates vary so massively across taxa?
We explored these questions in Erebia butterflies, a genus with extraordinary chromosome number diversity, from 7 to 52!

Hi everyone. I'm fairly new here so thought I would introduce myself. My background is in archaeology & then genetics so now I use genetics to answer questions in history & archaeology. I led the identification of King Richard III. I also do telly/radio presenting eg. BBC DNA Family Secrets. 😊🧬

New manuscript is out on a scale new to me: We sequenced >1000 genomes, mostly complete, of filamentous Actinobacteria. With these, we can start asking questions like "How long are Streptomyces terminal inverted repeats" and get answers like this 🧬🖥️ #secmet.

🧬 New recombination review 🧬
Genetic variation is essential for evolution. So what do we know about genetic variation underlying recombination rates & distribution? I've written a perspective for MBE on why its important, what we have learned, & open questions for the future.
Understanding the Genetic Basis of Variation in Meiotic Recombination: Past, Present, and Future
Abstract. Meiotic recombination is a fundamental feature of sexually reproducing species. It is often required for proper chromosome segregation and plays

Grateful and excited to see this project finally out as a preprint! 🥳

Using new genome assemblies, we uncovered evolutionary insights into Calyceraceae-Asteraceae evolution, and in true plant genomics fashion, uncovered more questions than answers 😅

Can’t wait to see where future work takes us! 🌼🧬
🌻 Sharing this preprint where we assembled 3 new chromosome-level genomes, including the first for Asteraceae's South American sister Calyceraceae! Asteraceae uses all the tricks when it comes to being the most ecologically successful family of flowering plants. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
