Quintinshill is probably not well known these days among the general populace, but to rail historians, the name sends chills down the spine.

I can’t believe I didn’t learn about the Quintinshill Rail Crash of 1915 at school and this is the first time I have learned about it. Still the worst Rail disaster in UK History. What an awful tragedy 😔

It hadn't until now occurred to me that the Lockerbie air disaster of 1988, which killed 270 people, is so near to the site of the Quintinshill rail disaster of 1915 in which 227 people were killed. The two are just 20km apart. Such a tragic record for that small part of rural southern Scotland.

#OnThisDay 1915 the #Quintinshill disaster killed 226.

In this blog @uophistory.bsky.social student George Robinson looks at James Hannah, fireman of 1 of the trains involved.

He appears in our database as he belonged to @rmtunion.bsky.social.

Visited 3 different buildings in Edinburgh today for #DoorsOpenDays : Newington Trinity, with its magnificent #StainedGlass, St Cecilia’s Hall, the oldest purpose built concert hall in Scotland and Out of the Blue, the former Drill Hall, with links to the Quintinshill railway disaster in WW1.

111 years ago today

On this day (22nd May) in 1915, an accident which remains the worst rail disaster in British history occurred at Quintinshill.

It involved troops on their way to board ships for the Gallipoli / Dardanelles campaign. Sadly many people were killed & injured as result.

I tend to find what people don't know about railway signalling is "if you do it wrong, people die" (we're actually planning to do a little talk on the Quintinshill accident to make this point)
