The racialization in the US heavily centers Islam, not Arab origin. The praxis of Arab and South Asian Muslims is converging, and meanwhile non-Muslim Arabs are not perceived as POC by themselves or by others (my go-to examples are the Sununu family and Ray LaHood - or even Richard Hanania).

I don’t really know Virgil or his takes I just agreed with his initial statements about how racialization does happen. From what I understood he was just pointing out how that needs to not be whitewashed in Hasans case.

It really highlights the ambiguity of whiteness itself. If you just looked at him, anyone would consider him a white guy. But whiteness as the absence of racialization means that, to anyone who knows about his Muslim and Turkish heritage and thinks those are disqualifying, he’s not white.

But I can see by your other response you’ll probably disagree with this too. Whiteness to me continues to be a complex shifting reality that has as much to do with racialization as self id. I personally despise being white but I remain calling myself so til white supremacy is fully deconstructed

re: Western racialization. It really is. There are blue-eyed, blond Iranians. Ahed Tamimi is a visibly ginger Palestinian. People from West and South Asia can have features Westerners read as “white.”
Western racialization is such a ridiculous concept. Three of my siblings look more like Piker than me & we're all fully South Asian.
Not for a second would they consider themselves white nor would any white person who knows our ethnicity and faith

If someone is visibly and repeatedly racialized as Middle Eastern/Muslim (as Hasan is, constantly) and you insist on calling them simply “white” in order to dismiss that racialization, that is a racist erasure of how race actually functions socially. Maybe put away your fucking calipers?
