Stuck in Sydney with work, I went with colleagues to Raratonga zoo. They mocked me when I said the cassowaries are frightening - until we got to the enclosure with 3/4" wire cable fence, and the like.

It’s that as part of the Aukus arrangements, US nuclear weapons might be stationed in or pass through Australia. That would be new, and contrary to both longstanding policy and treaty obligations under Raratonga.

The trauma of being taken from his culture and extended family in Rarotonga was something we never talked about, and didn’t know how to talk about. My grandma went to Raratonga on a boat and brought him back.

I can't believe it was 25 years ago (!) but the LMS project was an exceptional opportunity. I was fortunate enough to do further fieldwork in Raratonga and Tahiti too. I'd love to revisit the work with older eyes.

Flew into Honolulu airport some years ago. Arrived from Raratonga airport in the Cook Islands where the departure lounge was outside under a palm roof. So much nicer. Wouldn't work at Stansted though.
