Unfortunately, kind of the way flags work, popular association quickly supercedes intended symbolism. Similarly the RBiH flag initially intended the Kotromanic dynasty arms as a neutral Bosnian symbol, but it quickly became seen as the "Bosniak flag".

At my proddy school they told us the Irish flag was green for Ireland, orange for the bigots and white to represent peace between the two.

Ironically this is what both the RBiH and Croat nationalist leadership *thought* the Washington Agreement was - that the FBiH would be the whole country and RS would be dissolved into more FBiH cantons. Zubak was pissed off when that didn't happen!

The treatment of Zelensky by Trump here is quite reminiscent of the international treatment of Izetbegović and the RBiH government during the Bosnian War. The difference is that while the latter was more widespread than just by the US, it was also much less public and open than this is.

1990s British politics on the Yugoslav Wars is even weirder, there was almost no detectable pattern of support of any kind. Even Northern Irish Unionism had both pro-RBiH and pro-Milosevic segments.

Yes, people died and spilled blood in defence of the RBiH flag. And some of them were gay, or had/have gay friends, family members, etc. And the Bosnian Army seemingly continues to have gay soldiers, despite efforts to shame them whenever this comes to light.

Yep, it's true. This was why Tudjman moved to take out Blaz Kraljevic and the HOS, because they sided with the RBiH government against the HDZ efforts to partition BiH w/ Karadzic for precisely this reason.

I don't want to play down the Islamophobic element, but I don't think the effect of it was as clear-cut as we might think in a post-9/11 world. Plenty of Westerners mobilised Islamophobic sterotypes in *support* of the RBiH - i.e. "we need a united BiH to keep the Muslim population diluted".
