Cognex Corporation has announced its acquisition of RealSense, aiming to expand its machine vision leadership into the growing robotic perception market, promising significant advances.

Shifting to physical AI, Cognex to acquire Intel spinoff RealSense in $500 million deal

U.S. machine vision company Cognex Corp. said today that it intends to buy RealSense Inc., the robotics and computer vision startup that was spun out of Intel Corp. 14 months earlier in a deal valued at around $600 million. Nasdaq-listed Cognex will pay around $500 million in cash for the startup, while providing a three-year cash retention program worth $56.5 million for RealSense employees and also grant them restricted stock units valued at about $50 million. That means most of RealSense’s 180 employees, who are shareholders in the company, will receive at least $330,000 out of the deal. RealSense’s main product is its popular line of “depth cameras,” which rely on stereo vision, structured light and time-of-flight technology to ascertain depth. The cameras are often found in robots, which use them to know exactly how far away a certain object is. Robots and drones use this technology to create 3D maps of their environments, so they can navigate and avoid obstacles to operate safely within them. In addition, RealSense makes 3D scanning technology that’s used to create 3D models of objects and environments, as well as gesture and facial recognition technologies for touchless devices and security applications. RealSense, spin-off d’ Intel spécialisée dans la mise au point de solutions de computer vision et de caméras de profondeur, a annoncé le 22 septembre son acquisition par le fabricant américain de systèmes de vision industrielle Cognex. Ce dernier va débourser 500 millions de dollars (437 millions d’euros) pour s’offrir RealSense, auxquels s’ajouteront un programme de fidélisation des salariés de 56,5 millions de dollars sur trois ans et des actions à attribution restreinte d’une valeur de 50 millions de dollars.
